How to remedy the five typical foods that may prevent your body from absorbing vitamin D

How to remedy the five typical foods that may prevent your body from absorbing vitamin D

Immune system performance, bone health, and general well-being all depend on getting adequate vitamin D. While sunshine exposure and supplements might assist, many everyday meals may actually interfere with your body’s absorption of this vital mineral. Understanding these relationships can make a substantial difference in maintaining optimal vitamin D levels. Even a diet high in vitamin D or appropriate supplementation may not be as beneficial if we eat foods that prevent the absorption of the nutrient. Many people are unaware that their intake of vitamin D isn't being properly utilized by their body because of factors like fat content, specific minerals, or compounds in certain meals that can lower its bioavailability. To find out which five frequent foods might hinder the absorption of vitamin D and the mechanism underlying their effects, we consulted with an expert.According to Ashlesha Joshi, a nutritionist and fitness dietitian at Tone 30 Pilates, "some foods can affect how efficiently the body absorbs or uses vitamin D," as reported by indianexpress.com. The most prominent of these are foods that include phytates, like whole grains and legumes, which can bind to minerals and vitamin D and hinder absorption. Caffeine from tea or coffee in excess can also cause problems by lowering the expression of vitamin D receptors in the intestines. Regular alcohol consumption damages liver function, which is necessary for the conversion of vitamin D into its active form. Trans fats and hydrogenated oils included in processed foods might hinder the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin D. Finally, because vitamin D is fat-soluble and needs dietary lipids for effective uptake, particularly high-fibre diets, while generally healthy, might occasionally limit absorption efficiency.According to Joshi, "since vitamin D is fat-soluble, combining it with good fats can greatly enhance absorption." For example, eating foods high in vitamin D, such as salmon, eggs, or fortified cereals, together with foods high in healthy fats, like avocado, olive oil, or almonds, can improve absorption. Consuming foods high in vitamin K2, such as fermented soy or cheese, also aids in calcium metabolism and complements vitamin D. She adds that timing is also important, saying that consuming vitamin D-fortified meals or pills after your main meal of the day, when fat intake is highest, helps maximize absorption. Regular exposure to the sun, even for a short while each day, naturally raises vitamin D levels even more.

Try these pain-relieving at-home back exercises on World Spine Day.

Back pain is one of the most prevalent health issues in today's world, impacting professionals, homemakers, students, and even young children. The main causes of back discomfort include poor posture, extended sitting, and irregular activity. However, with the right workouts and proper posture, coupled with a few easy adjustments to our everyday routines, back discomfort can be greatly decreased. Maintaining normal alignment of the bones and joints, preventing weariness, and lessening the load on muscles and ligaments are all made possible by good posture. Conversely, bad posture can cause stiffness and muscle imbalances, which can ultimately lead to persistent back discomfort. Improving posture is important for maintaining spinal health for many years to come, according to Dr. Ranjith Unnikrishnan, Consultant-Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon, KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum. The health of your posture and spine are extremely important to your body. If left untreated, back discomfort can impair general quality of life, limit mobility, and lower productivity. Most people may avoid or lessen back pain without medicine if they are attentive, disciplined, and follow easy corrective measures, he said.

Reversing prediabetes without losing weight: How dietary modifications, fat distribution, and glucose management reduce the risk of diabetes by 70%

Reversing prediabetes without losing weight: How dietary modifications, fat distribution, and glucose management reduce the risk of diabetes by 70%

More than one in three persons in the US have prediabetes, which is characterized by high blood sugar levels that are not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. About 70% of people with prediabetes may develop type 2 diabetes if their condition is not controlled, which raises their risk of consequences like kidney damage, neurological issues, and heart disease. Reversing prediabetes has typically involved losing weight with medication, diet, or exercise. Recent studies, however, suggest a paradigm shift: enhancing insulin sensitivity and glucose management might be more important than simply losing weight. Lifestyle changes that focus on food, exercise, and fat distribution can result in remission and significantly reduce the long-term risk of type 2 diabetes.According to a recent study by German researchers at University Hospital Tübingen that was published in Nature Medicine, prediabetes can be corrected without weight loss. After a year of lifestyle changes, participants who were able to achieve normal blood glucose regulation but did not lose a considerable amount of weight had a 70% lower chance of acquiring type 2 diabetes over the course of five years than those who were unable to achieve remission. Whole grains, fruits, non-starchy vegetables, and legumes are good sources of carbs, whereas meals high in healthy fats include fatty fish, seeds, nuts, and olive oil. Normalizing blood glucose levels also requires controlling stress and getting enough sleep. In the US, prediabetes, characterized by high blood sugar that is not yet diagnosed as diabetes, affects more than one in three persons. In addition to concerns like heart disease, renal issues, and nerve damage, type 2 diabetes eventually develops in about 70% of people with prediabetes if left untreated. Reversing prediabetes has typically involved losing weight with medication, diet, or exercise.A recent study that was published in Nature Medicine indicates that prediabetes can be corrected without weight loss, according to a Morning News Today story. After a year of lifestyle interventions, participants who did not lose weight but achieved normal blood glucose regulation had a 70% lower risk of type 2 diabetes over the next five years than those who did not achieve remission, according to research from the University Hospital Tübingen in Germany."A lifestyle intervention can bring prediabetes into remission, meaning back to normal glucose values, even without weight loss, and this remission cuts future type 2 diabetes risk by approximately 70% over up to 10 years," co-author Dr. Andreas Birkenfeld told Medical News Today.

Which of the three magnificent cats would most likely prevail in a fight involving tigers, leopards, and lions?

Which of the three magnificent cats would most likely prevail in a fight involving tigers, leopards, and lions?

Big cats, from the sprawling African savannahs to the center of deep Asian jungles, captivate our collective imagination, especially when they are included in fictitious fights. In a conflict between a tiger, a leopard, or a lion, who would win? Let's examine the information. When it comes to sheer muscle and mass, tigers have the advantage. The largest of the great cats, male tigers can weigh up to 600 pounds or more. Although they usually weigh a little less, lions' stocky bodies nevertheless contain a lot of strength. Further investigation reveals that adult male tigers weigh 400–670 pounds, while male lions weigh 331–550 pounds. These parameters are validated by first-hand reports from animal observers: Even the greatest African lions are frequently greatly outnumbered by Bengal and Siberian tigers.Instead of speculating about who would prevail in a battle, we would much rather people focus their mental energies on preserving these amazing kitties. But because it's a frequently asked question, let's get started. The quick answer is that it depends on a variety of characteristics, including temperament, age, and size. Nonetheless, tigers typically have the upper hand. Tigers have an advantage in warfare since they are not only typically larger but also better at fighting when standing on their hind legs. Although there is much disagreement over the efficacy of this, some think that a lion's mane may offer some neck protection. When tigers and lions faced up in the Roman Coliseum, according to ancient legend, the tigers typically prevailed. Fortunately, though, those savage days are long gone. The likelihood of a tiger and lion encountering in the wild is nearly nonexistent nowadays. Lions are primarily located in Africa, with a small population surviving in a small area of India, whereas tigers traverse Asia. A tight affinity between these two species was shown at Big Cat Rescue between Cameron, a male lion, and Zabu, a white tiger. They were saved from a breeding environment that aimed to create ligers, a hybrid that we most definitely do not support. Although their humorous exchanges may have seemed like a quarrel, rest assured that it was all in good humor. And just so you know, we like to assume Zabu would have had the advantage.

International Women's Day 2025: Five significant barriers to women's health and strategies for overcoming them

International Women's Day 2025: Learn about the main barriers to women's health, ranging from mental health to chronic illnesses.International Women's Day 2025: Women's Day is quickly approaching, and it's critical to recognize the challenges women face in terms of their lifestyle and health. "Obesity is a serious health challenge — more than just a number on the scale," stated Dr. Atul NC Peters, senior director of bariatric, minimum access, and general surgery at Max Smart Super Speciality Hospital in Saket in an interview with HT Lifestyle. Millions of women around the world are impacted, as are lakhs of Indian women. Many women deal with the issues related to obesity and its diseases in silence. In addition to destroying reproductive health, it also impacts mental health, raises the chance of chronic illnesses, and causes social stigma.Increased risk of chronic diseases: As weight or waist circumference rises, an obese woman's risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and some types of cancer, including breast, ovarian, and uterine malignancies, can rise dramatically. Frequent blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar checks would help avoid therapy delays. Reducing body weight by even 5–10% can significantly reduce the risk of disease.

This is what occurs to the body when exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in the environment.

There are two types of electromagnetic fields: low-frequency EMFs, which come from electrical wiring, and high-frequency EMFs, which come from things like cell phones and Wi-Fi routers.Concerns about electromagnetic fields (EMF) of various frequencies have been brought up time and time again by the World Health Organization (WHO), which has stated that "all populations are now exposed to varying degrees of EMF, and the levels will continue to increase as technology advances." It went on to say that everyone is exposed to a "complex mix of weak electric and magnetic fields, both at home and at work, from telecommunications and broadcasting to the generation and transmission of electricity, domestic appliances, and industrial equipment."In light of these worries, we were curious to learn more when we saw an Instagram post advising against using computers while they were charging. Another unnatural, man-made pollution that is interfering with human biology is electromagnetic fields (EMFs). It is without a doubt the most significant alteration to our environment in the past century. Although you can't totally prevent them, there are numerous ways to lessen your exposure, according to the post on Carnivore Aurelius' Facebook.EMFs are invisible areas of energy created by electrically charged objects, such as power lines, home appliances, and wireless devices, according to Dr. Haricharan G, senior consultant physician, HoD, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad, who we consulted for an expert opinion. "They can be divided into two categories: low-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs), which come from electrical wiring, and high-frequency EMFs, which come from cell phones and Wi-Fi routers," Dr. Haricharan explained.

Response: The true meaning of deep, quality sleep

The significance of deep, high-quality sleep for recuperation, fitness, and overall health is frequently emphasized by medical professionals. However, have you ever considered its precise meaning? Luke Coutinho, a lifestyle coach, recently reaffirmed this, saying that getting enough sleep is therapeutic. How many of you had a good night's sleep and awoke feeling rejuvenated and prepared for the day? On Instagram, he posed the question, "How many of you have realized that deep sleep improves your hormones, skin, hair, and health/condition?"We consulted specialists to determine the precise definition. According to Dr. Aarti Ullal, a doctor and diabetologist at Gleneagles Hospital Parel, symptoms of inadequate deep sleep include feeling exhausted and unrefreshed upon waking up, having trouble concentrating and learning, or being drowsy during the day. She added that sleep is essential for maintaining a number of physical processes, saying: "Your body tends to repair cells when you are in deep slumber as the muscles start to rebuild and tissues heal." This can help you recuperate quickly, especially after physically demanding activity.According to Dr. Ullal, getting a good night's sleep improves memory in addition to fortifying the immune system. This is why getting a decent night's sleep becomes so important. Your body can benefit greatly from deep sleep. After a demanding and stressful day, it might aid in your relaxation and calmness. Cortisol and other stress hormones tend to decrease while you sleep, which helps reduce stress. According to Dr. Ullal, getting enough sleep can help you focus better, manage stress, elevate your mood, and lower your chance of developing a number of health issues.

Why is your dog's nose a little moist?

Why is your dog's nose a little moist?

Pet owners have always been captivated by dogs' noses, and a wet nose is frequently seen as an indication of our canine friends' health and wellbeing. Although this trait may seem odd, there is more to its significance than meets the eye. The senior veterinarian at Vetic Pet Clinic, Dr. Abhishek Choudhary, described the causes of our pets' wet snouts and the implications for their general health. An organic fragrance enhancer Dogs have a famous sense of smell, and their moist noses further enhance this sense. Mucus is produced by special glands in a dog's nose, which helps them better digest odors and retain aromas from their environment. According to Dr. Choudhary, "the moisture not only traps scent particles but also prevents the nasal passages from drying out." Dogs' ability to smell is further enhanced by the regular licking they do to keep their noses moist. An integrated cooling system Dogs don't perspire through their skin like people do. Rather, they use different cooling techniques, such using their nostrils. A dog's nose's wetness helps control body temperature. "A wet nose is particularly effective in humid or cool environments, helping dogs stay comfortable," says Dr. Choudhary. What happens if a dog has an excessively wet or dry nose? It's important to differentiate between regular moisture and unhealthy symptoms, even though a wet nose is typically an indication of excellent health. Constant nasal drips could be a sign of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) or other underlying medical conditions. Dr. Choudhary suggests seeing a veterinarian if your pet's nose is consistently runny. On the other hand, a dry or cracked nose may indicate fever, dehydration, or other medical issues. "A dry nose isn't always alarming but should be monitored closely, especially if accompanied by other symptoms," emphasizes Dr. Choudhary. In these situations, a trip to the veterinarian is advised.

Without taking any medication, the Bengaluru traffic cop managed to lower his elevated blood pressure: Which lifestyle, fitness, and diet tips are effective?

Without taking any medication, the Bengaluru traffic cop managed to lower his elevated blood pressure: Which lifestyle, fitness, and diet tips are effective?

Let me tell you about a Bengaluru traffic policeman who came to see me with a high blood pressure reading of 160/100 mm Hg (the first number is systolic pressure, which is the force of the blood when it is pumped out of the heart, and the second number is diastolic, which is measured between heartbeats when the heart is filling with blood) A healthy systolic blood pressure is less than 120 mm Hg and diastolic is less than 80 mm Hg. Yet he seemed normal. He informed me that while he was on duty, controlling the city's tumultuous traffic, his blood pressure would rise. He had fluctuating blood pressure, though, as his blood pressure would return to normal when he was not on duty. I discovered that he was overweight, had erratic eating habits, and had trouble sleeping. Simply put, his stress levels and physical ailments caused his blood pressure to rise. Many of you ask me if you should begin taking medicine as soon as your high blood pressure is diagnosed. Doctors advise changing one's lifestyle first, unless there is an urgent condition with significant complications. If you are successful, you might not need to be drug dependant at all, which makes this period extremely important. Our traffic cop gotLose weight: He lost around 5 kg of body weight and saw his readings improve.  Blood pressure goes down by 1 mm Hg with each kilogram. Also, the size of the waistline matters as carrying too much weight around the middle can raise the risk of high blood pressure. For men, the waistline circumference should not go over 90 cm and for women 80 cm.

According to Vidyut Jammwal An expert calculates that five minutes of breathwork equals ten kilometers of running or cardiovascular strength.

According to Dr. Vaibhav Mishra, senior director of cardiac surgery at Max Hospital in Patparganj, breath exercises like diaphragmatic breathing and pranayama or box breathing help increase lung capacity.Vidyut Jammwal, a commando actor and mixed martial artist, has advised everyone to learn breathing techniques. "Ten kilometers of running or cardiovascular strength equals five minutes of breathwork per day," Jammwal stated at the 2024 Action Hero Fitness Awards. The claim that five minutes of breathing each day is equivalent to ten kilometers of running each day for cardiovascular strength "isn't quite accurate and far too simplistic," according to Dr. Vaibhav Mishra, senior director of cardiac surgery at Max Hospital in Patparganj. "Although breath training has a place in health, it cannot take the place of mild aerobic exercise like running or other types," Dr. Mishra stated. Pranayama, or box breathing, and diaphragmatic breathing are examples of breath training techniques that can enhance oxygen delivery and lung capacity while lowering blood pressure and stress levels.
