Together, mat work and reformer work provide a comprehensive approach to movement, strength, and well-being, and both are equally important parts of a full Pilates practice. We are well into the new year, and just like everyone else, celebs are getting back on track and working out hard. Namrata Purohit, a fitness specialist, recently posted a photo of her client Mira Kapoor working out hard on a Pilates reformer.

The bulky equipment that fitness aficionados frequently display in their gym selfies may frighten those who are new to Pilates, leading them to believe that workout mats are a safer option. Both mat practice and equipment-based exercises were equally important in the original classical Pilates approach, according to Kavita Prakash, founder of Pilates for Wellbeing. The method's creator, Joseph Pilates, recognized the importance of both strategies for a well-rounded and successful practice. "Equipment-based exercises, like those done on the Reformer, use springs to provide support and resistance, while mat work pushes practitioners to use their own body weight for resistance." Originally known as Contrology, this movement technique was developed by Joseph Pilates as a means of rehabilitation for wounded POWs. Restoring strength, stability, and mobility in addition to healing was the aim, she stated.
