Is the 'Caveman Skincare Routine' a hoax in terms of hygiene?
I'm a regular TikTok scroller (the four hours of screen time a day speaks for itself), and I've seen a ton of beauty films, from popular trends to amazing hacks that would put a Victorian kid in a coma. The caveman skincare method, however, may just take the biscuit—or perhaps I should say water—as the most talked-about topic on SkinTok lately. The 'Caveman Skincare Method' is the skincare regimen that TikTok creator Tia Zakher has lately described in a number of videos on the platform. "After 8 years of picking and over-exfoliating, I'm healing my skin barrier by doing the one thing I never tried before... absolutely nothing," Tia explains in a video that has received 9.7 million views. In other words, she has stopped using water in addition to all skincare products (I'm referring about moisturizer, exfoliant, and cleanser). Tia responded to Cosmopolitan UK's inquiry on why she chose to utilize the caveman skincare method by saying, "I decided to do it because I wanted to try a different approach and I do think it's working for me."

Is this Janhvi Kapoor-approved DIY face mask worth the hype?
"The radiant and perfect complexion of Janhvi Kapoor has been unveiled, and the secret to her lovely skin is a homemade face mask. Kapoor bragged about the many health advantages of this concoction, which is made of honey, mashed bananas, curd, orange scrub, and almond oil. Dr. Aanchal Panth shared her thoughts on this celebrity-endorsed skincare product, as social media was ablaze with claims of its efficacy. Let's investigate if giving it a shot is worthwhile. Kapoor began by taking curd and placing it in a bowl with mashed bananas, honey, and an additional layer of malai. After thoroughly blending, she smeared it across her freshly washed face. She then squeezed an orange, rubbed the juice of the fruit over her face, and covered it with the mask. Following the removal of the mask, she applied almond oil beneath her eyes. Dr. Panth elucidated the effectiveness of the mask by pointing out that although it is moisturizing, putting orange directly on the skin is not advised. ""This is a good mask that will help with moisturizing, especially if you have dry skin."" She noted that scrubbing orange juice on the face can be extremely irritating to the skin, but that as she used the malai of the curd, the thicker part of it will be even more moisturizing. It may make your skin more vulnerable to UV radiation, particularly if you have dark patches or sensitive skin. Completely avoid this, she continued. Regarding the almond oil, Dr. Panth clarified that it can be used as well as over the entire face, particularly in light of the damage caused by the orange; it serves as a beneficial moisturizer. The ingredients are broken down as follows: Dear Honey: Being a naturally occurring humectant, it helps the skin stay hydrated and becomes smooth and silky. Additionally, it has antibacterial qualities that enable it to effectively combat bacteria that cause acne and reduce inflammation. Bananas: Potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin E are among the many vitamins and minerals they contain that are rich in and help to hydrate and nourish the skin. Banana enzymes gently exfoliate the skin to reveal a brighter complexion by removing dead cells Lactic acid, which is present in curd, acts as a mild exfoliator to encourage cell turnover and reveal younger-looking skin. It also helps reduce redness and irritation and has moisturizing qualities. Orange: Natural acids found in citrus fruits, such as oranges, can irritate delicate skin, particularly when applied topically. It contains substances that may increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight, raising the possibility of sunburn and other injury. To lessen the chance of discomfort, dilute orange juice or zest with water or combine it with other calming components before applying it directly to the skin. Almond oil: High in fatty acids and vitamin E, it nourishes and moisturizes the skin, leaving it feeling silky and smooth. It also aids in scar fading. "

Similarly, Marico recently acquired a 58 per cent stake in Direct-To-Consumer (D2C) Satiya Nutraceuticals Pvt Ltd and its wholly-owned subsidiary Juizo Advisory Pvt Ltd owns the brand ‘The Plant Fix-Plix’. “We have made substantial progress but we are not there quite yet. Capital foods complement from a cuisine perspective, we cover the three cuisines; Indian with Sampann, Western with Smith & Jones and then Oriental with Capital Foods. It gets us into categories of chutney, dips, sauces, and noodles, which we did not have in our portfolio. This has filled some gaps in our portfolio but I think we still have got options to play. In the short term, we will make sure we integrate the businesses and make value but we remain quite open to organic and inorganic options to grow forward. It is not the end of the road for M&A and we still have options providing if they make sense from strategic and financial perspective. A strategic perspective means filling in gaps faster than what we can on our own on the entire roadmap,” said Sunil D’Souza, CEO and MD of Tata Consumer Products Ltd during the earnings call. With the acquisitions, the FMCG maker is also in the process of starting its pharmaceutical distribution network, “We have Gofit and Soulful products that can sell in pharmacies but we never had the scale to put up an independent distribution system work. We have a target right now for closing and integration. We aim to integrate the businesses within three to four months of closing. The work has started on how to build the pharma channel. We had access to information, but not all of it. Now that we’ve done the signing, we will have access to almost all the information. I expect in the next three to four months for us to have a very clear view of how we will get into the pharma channel,” said D’Souza to businessline after the acquisition.

In winter do your ears pop? For this reason
Have you ever had that weird "pop" in your ears when you go outside on a cold winter's day? It's not exclusive to you! Your body is trying to react to a rapid change in air pressure when you feel that popping sensation, and there are a few interesting reasons why it happens more often in the winter. Our ears may pop in the winter due to variations in air pressure, according to Dr. Deepti Sinha, lead consultant in the ENT department at the CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi.Cold temperatures can cause lower air pressure, especially in small locations like the middle ear. The Eustachian tubes, which equalize the pressure on either side of the eardrum, are impacted by this pressure differential. When these tubes can't regulate pressure, we hear a popping sound in our ears," she said in a conversation with indianexpress.com.Furthermore, Dr. Sinha stated that problems from previous ear infections may contribute to middle ear fluid retention throughout the winter and generate continuous popping and cracking sounds. The environment that seasonal pressure fluctuations and residual fluid create, which increases the risk of ear pops, emphasizes the importance of proper ear care during the colder months. Our ears may pop in the winter due to variations in air pressure, according to Dr. Deepti Sinha, lead consultant in the ENT department at the CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi. Why should you give in to the impulse to urinate?
Maintaining a healthy urinary tract and averting potential consequences requires regular and timely bladder emptying. If we often suppress our urge to urinate when driving or during a crucial meeting, we might not be doing our bodies any favors. According to experts, it's imperative that you let go because if you habitually interfere with your body's natural processes, it could lead to health problems.Think of your bladder like a balloon. It alerts your brain when it gets full of pee and needs to be emptied. If you choose to hold it in at this point, the bladder will continue to grow and press on its walls. It's similar to blowing up a balloon larger than is advised because someday it might burst. Although your bladder won't explode, it can still cause issues, according to Dr. Ashutosh Baghel, a kidney transplant surgeon, andrologist, and consultant urologist at Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road.Dietitian Leema Mahajan posted on Instagram that it could potentially raise the risk of bladder dysfunction as well as an increased susceptibility to UTIs, or urinary tract infections.According to Dr. Shobha Gupta, medical director, gynecologist, and IVF specialist from Mother's Lap IVF Centre in New Delhi and Vrindavan, it might result in urinary tract infections (UTTIs) since prolonged bladder retention can serve as a haven for bacteria. "If left untreated, UTIs can result in pain, discomfort, and possibly more severe problems. Furthermore, over time, bladder dysfunction may result from repressing the urge to urinate, according to Dr. Gupta. The body's waste disposal mechanism is highly developed. "This natural process of the body being balanced out is upset when the urge to urinate is suppressed," stated Dr. Babina N. M., chief medical officer of Jindal Naturecure Institute. The bladder is a muscle, after all, and neglecting its signals to empty it on a regular basis might weaken those muscles and decrease the capacity of the bladder. "This may make it harder for you to regulate the release of pee, which can lead to problems like incontinence. In addition, if the urge to urinate is suppressed for an extended period of time, the bladder may become distended, which could be painful and harmful. Dr. Gupta stated, "In severe circumstances, it may even lead to a condition known as urine retention, where the bladder becomes unable to empty itself correctly.

Trans fats: what are they? Why are they so dangerous?
Five nations received the first-ever accreditation from the World Health Organization (WHO) for implementing policies to get rid of industrially manufactured trans fats, or iTFA. The food environment for 3.7 billion people, or 46% of the world's population, has significantly improved thanks to the implementation of best practice policies for addressing iTFA in food by 53 countries, up from 6% just five years ago. The World Health Organization said in a statement that these regulations are anticipated to save about 183 000 lives annually. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of WHO, stated that trans fat "has huge health risks but no known health benefit."The World Health Organization (WHO) said in 2018 that trans fats generated industrially would be removed from the world's food supply by 2023. The fact that so many nations have passed laws restricting or outlawing trans fat in food makes us extremely happy. However, enacting a policy is a different matter from just proposing it. I commend Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, and Lithuania for being at the forefront of the global monitoring and enforcement of trans fat legislation. We implore other nations to take note of their example.Trans fats are a kind of unsaturated fat that can be created artificially by the industrial process of hydrogenation, or they can exist naturally. Small levels of naturally occurring trans fats can be found in several animal products, including dairy and meat. But industrially generated trans fats—made when hydrogen is added to vegetable oils to increase their solidity at room temperature—are the main source of concern. Food items are now frequently used as an ingredient in processed and professionally baked goods since this technique extends their shelf life and stability.Trans fats have been linked to numerous health concerns, the most well-known of which being their detrimental effects on cardiovascular health. Trans fats have been demonstrated to concurrently decrease levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good" cholesterol, and increase levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad" cholesterol. This negative change in cholesterol levels elevates the risk of heart attacks and strokes as well as coronary heart disease.Insulin resistance, a state in which the body's cells lose their sensitivity to the effects of insulin, has been linked to trans fats. An increased risk of type 2 diabetes and high blood sugar levels can result from this insulin resistance. Trans fats' pro-inflammatory properties also play a role in the insulin resistance that is seen in people who consume large amounts of these fats. When it comes to consuming trans fats, pregnant women should exercise extra caution. Research has indicated that consuming more trans fats while pregnant may raise the risk of problems like gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia. Trans fats have also been linked to decreased birth weight and negative effects on embryonic development, according to research. There may be a connection between trans fat intake and cognitive decline, according to recent studies. An elevated risk of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia has been linked to a high trans fat diet. While the precise processes underlying this relationship are still being investigated, trans fats' impacts on inflammation and oxidative stress may play a role in brain impairment.Trans fats have a role in weight growth and obesity, however not as much as other health issues. According to certain research, a diet heavy in trans fats may increase the amount of fat deposited in the abdomen, which could exacerbate central obesity, a condition that is known to raise the risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

The Maldives is no longer the preferred island retreat for Indians.
In January 2024, there was a notable shift in the Maldives archipelago's tourism landscape. This change was indicated by a sharp drop in the number of Indian tourists, who had historically made up the largest traveler group in the nation. The current situation stems from a recent diplomatic dispute that was sparked by disparaging remarks made about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Maldivian ministers. The conflict started when Prime Minister Modi shared captivating photos from his early January visit to Lakshadweep, a Union Territory of India, showing off its natural beauty.Following the ministers of the Maldives' comments on social media, a social media storm developed, leading Indians to boycott Maldives travel in general and the Maldives in particular. The diplomatic impasse that resulted from the online debate was evident in the decline of Indian visitors to the Maldives. If information is to be believed, only 13,989 Indian tourists—or 8% of all visitors—visited the archipelago in January. With regard to countries sending tourists to the Maldives this month, India came in fifth. In January 2024, Russia accounted for 18,561 of the Maldives' foreign visitor count, making it the country's largest contributor. Closely trailing behind, Italy, China, and the UK took second, third, and fourth place, respectively. The Maldives has traditionally benefited greatly from tourism from India. For example, India held the second position in December 2023 with 161,751 tourists. Travel trends have obviously been impacted by the diplomatic spat, though, as there were fewer Indian visitors in January.Lakshadweep in India gained attention for its enthralling natural beauty and unrealized potential. Lakshadweep, blessed with immaculate beaches, colorful coral reefs, and a thriving marine ecosystem, provides a tranquil haven from the bustle of city life. Travelers are becoming more curious and interested in Lakshadweep as a result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent distribution of stunning photos highlighting the archipelago's splendor.

HomeFirst Finance will likely borrow Rs 4,000 crore in 2024-25 (April-March) to grow its loan book, managing director and chief executive officer Manoj Viswanathan, has said. “We have already tied up our requirement for this financial year. Going ahead, the non-banking financial company is looking to increase borrowings from development finance institutions, with the Reserve Bank of India has been cautioning non-bank lenders against over-reliance on bank borrowings. “Overall, we feel that our liability profile is balanced. We should not be having any issues for the next few years,” he said. The company’s assets under management stood at around Rs 9,000 crore as on December 31. It expects the AUM to grow to Rs 20,000 crore in the next three years. Housing loans comprise 86% of the AUM. Loan against property and shop loans comprise the remaining 14%.Around 68% of the book comprises loans to the salaried customer segment and the rest is to the self-employed segment. Loan disbursals surpassed Rs 1,000 crore in the December quarter.Currently, around 6% of disbursals are done through the co-lending route. The NBFC has co-lending partnerships with Central Bank of India and Union Bank of India. By the end of 2024-25, around 10% of disbursals will be done through the co-lending route. The company remains focused on increasing its return on equity (RoE). The RoE is expected to improve due to a growth in the loan book and higher leverage. “We are focused on return on equity. As we leverage the book, the return on assets will decline in any case. But, RoEs are improving in spite of net interest margins being lower,” Viswanathan said. The return on equity rose 210 basis points year-on-year to 15.8% in the December quarter.
