After a video of passengers eating on the tarmac at Mumbai Airport went viral on social media, the Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia held a meeting with all ministry officials at midnight yesterday. And through all this chaos, budget airlines IndiGo has been thrown into the limelight. The passengers of a Goa-Delhi flight that was diverted to Mumbai owing to poor visibility in the National Capital on Sunday (14 January) were seen dining on the apron upon disembarking. In the video that went viral on social media, flyers can be seen seated on the tarmac and eating food next to the parked IndiGo aircraft. The incident sparked safety concerns as the apron is designated for aircraft activities. The ground staff connected the aircraft with the stepladder and the passengers were asked to deboard. As the angry flyers disembarked, they refused to enter the terminal building of the Mumbai airport, HT reported.Many disgruntled passengers demanded the flight be taken directly to Delhi. Videos showed some flyers with their food packets, eating on the apron.An airline official told HT that Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel had to be called to remove them from the tarmac and take them to a safety zone.The flight finally took off for Delhi at 2.39 am on Monday. IndiGo said it was aware of the incident and apologised to the customers, saying it was “currently looking into the incident”.According to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the passengers were “irate” due to the flight delay in Goa and left the aircraft as soon as it landed in Mumbai.

Apple to remove blood oxygen feature from some watches after US ban

Apple will remove the blood oxygen monitoring feature from the Apple Watch 9 and Ultra 2 sold in the United States due to a patent infringement claim. Apple will remove the blood oxygen measuring feature from some of its latest Apple Watches in the United States in a move that will allow the company to continue selling the devices in the country as it fights a lawsuit against California-based health technology firm Masimo. The company said in a statement that the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 model smartwatches will start going on sale on Thursday, reported Reuters. The company has been embroiled in a legal dispute with Masimo, which manufactures medical devices, ever since the International Trade Commission (ITC) in October found that its smartwatches had sensors that infringed upon Masimo’s patents. The watches that had the sensors were banned on December 26 last year before Apple got a victory in a US appeals court on December 27 to pause the import ban on the smartwatches. But the court did not turn the ITC decision, which is currently under appeal. It is quite rare for technology companies like Apple to remove features from released products and there is a chance that the absence of a blood oxygen sensor might turn away some customers.“Pending the appeal, Apple is taking steps to comply with the ruling while ensuring customers have access to Apple Watch with limited disruption. These steps include introducing a version of Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the United States without the Blood Oxygen feature. There is no impact to Apple Watch units previously purchased that include the Blood Oxygen feature,” said an Apple spokesperson to CNBC. The Apple Watch is an important product category for the company. It made nearly $40 billion in sales from the wearables category in 2023. This category also includes its headphones but the watches make up a significant chunk. Masimo accused Apple of hiring its employees and stealing its technology to create the pulse oximetry devices used in the smartwatches. The watches continued to be available for sale in the United States through various channels after Apple received a temporary reprieve from the US court.Masimo’s founder and chief executive Joe Kiani said the ruling showed that “even the largest and most powerful companies must respect the intellectual rights of American inventors and must deal with the consequences when they are caught infringing others’ patents,” according to BBC.

HUL Q3 preview: Price cuts may hit topline, weak festive demand to limit volumes

HUL’s EBITDA margin is expected to increase 77 basis points to 24.1 percent. Brokerages expect a 470 basis points YoY increase in gross margins as input costs like palm oil, tea, and coffee declined.EBITDA is short for earnings before interest, tax depreciation and amortisation. One basis points is one-hundredth of a percentage point.Volumes have remained weak for the lifebuoy and Dove manufacturer since the September quarter of the previous financial year, ranging from 2-5 percent. Volume growth has been slow due to a weak pick-up in rural demand even as small and regional players eat into its market share.The company's home-care category is expected to report a modest 0.5 percent growth in sales YoY due to price cuts in the laundry portfolio, Kotak Institutional Equities said in its Q3FY24 results update.The personal care and food and refreshments category is estimated to grow 3.5 percent and 3 percent YoY, respectively, BNP Paribas said. Tea prices have fallen further, which may lead to increased competition, analysts say. In a situation of easing inflation, small players start entering the market and gain market share from big and listed players.Advertising and promotional spends for the FMCG company is estimated to be around 10 percent of Q3FY24 sales, BNP Paribas said.    

Big brands, chain stores boost retail developments in tier-2 cities

Last year, H&M opened its store in Ranchi, GAP too opened its doors to Guwahati; and Rare Rabbit did the same in Kochi. It’s not just top apparel chains that are going deeper into Bharat, fine dining restaurants like Royal Train Cuisine too have set up shop in Lucknow and Wow chain is wooing Chandigarh. In summation, as many as 35 major retail brands expanded their footprint to 14 tier-2 cities between January to September 2023, says a report by real estate services and investment firm CBRE. This flurry of activity has triggered a retail space boom in 14 cities that include Chandigarh, Jaipur, Indore, Goa, Mangalore, Kochi, Lucknow, Patna, Ranchi, Guwahati, Bhubaneshwar, Vizag, Mysore, and Coimbatore. Chains like Armani Exchange, Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Tanishq, Marks & Spencer, Starbucks, Pizza Express, Under Armour are now catering to a growing set of consumers in these cities. “Domestic and international fashion brands are looking to expand in non-metro cities, fueled by a well-aware and well-travelled consumer set,” said Ram Chandnani, MD, advisory & transactions services of CBRE India. Changing consumption patterns are affecting the retail dynamics in these cities, the report says. E-commerce trends also point to a highly-aspiring consumer base in these cities, which has brought in an influx of quality retail supply. “A striking example of evolving consumer patterns in these cities is the fact that 50% of online urban shoppers were residing in these tier-2 and tier-3 cities. A percentage that’s projected to reach nearly 60% by 2030,” the report adds.As high-end retailers make a beeline for tier-2 city business, the retail developments in the cities also picked up pace. The total retail stock in these 14 cities stood at 29 million square feet, as of September 2023. Amongst them, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Chandigarh each boast retail stock ranging between 3-7 million square feet.In the three months between July and September 2023, around 2.4 million square feet was added in the 14 cities. Most of it was added in Chandigarh, Jaipur and Lucknow. Also, a similar amount – again 2.4 million square feet – was absorbed across these cities, led by Kochi, Jaipur, and Goa.“The e-commerce boom, tech-savvy consumer base, growing aspirations and surge in discretionary purchasing are defining the retail growth in tier-II cities. Most non-metro cities are established trade and business hubs and are now witnessing multinational corporations and start-ups setting up offices as well,” said Anshuman Magazine, chairman & CEO, India, Southeast Asia, Middle East & Africa of CBRE.The retail developments have a healthy mix of malls and high streets. But, they too are evolving from vanilla stores in high-streets to malls by top-end developers. A lot of high-end malls have also come up in recent times like Nexus Elante Mall in Chandigarh; World Trade Park Mall in Jaipur; DLF Mall in Panjim and more.“Investment-grade developers are setting up large-sized contemporary malls in these cities, which are seen as an entertainment destination and not just as a place to shop,” adds Magazine.
