Why Is There A Red Line Applied to Certain Medicines?

Why Is There A Red Line Applied to Certain Medicines?

Have you ever noticed the red stripe on some prescription labels? It's not only ornamental! This seemingly insignificant detail conveys important information about the medication inside. The issue? A lot of people overlook this important hint, which may result in taking medication without a prescription. Furthermore, self-medication can be dangerous—sometimes even fatal, as we all know.   In an advisory released on Sunday, the Ministry of Health addressed this problem by stressing the significance of focusing on a particular detail found on the back label. This detail has the potential to affect the safety and efficacy of your medication. According to the ministry, pharmacies are only permitted to dispense these medications in conjunction with a legitimate medical prescription.Antibiotic resistance is avoidable! The Ministry of Health stated on X that a RED LINE on the medication strip suggests that the medication should not be taken without a prescription. Therefore, it is equally important to note whether the medicine's packet has a red stripe on it as it is to check the medicine's expiration date. In the meantime, the health ministry announced on Friday that India has won the coveted Measles and Rubella Champion Award in honor of the nation's valiant efforts to fight these infectious diseases.

Unbelievably High Increase in STDs Throughout Europe

Unbelievably High Increase in STDs Throughout Europe

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are on the rise throughout Europe, according to the EU's health agency, which stated on Thursday that these cases are "troubling" and may only represent "the tip of the iceberg". The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports that in 2022, the number of syphilis cases increased by 34% to over 35,391, while the number of gonorrhoea cases increased by 48% to 70,881 in the EU and EEA region.Chlamydia cases increased by 16 percent to 216,508 in the 27 nations the organization covers. Both startling and concerning is this increase, according to ECDC director Andrea Ammon at a press conference. Ammon explained that this was because different countries had different testing policies and access to sexual health care. "These numbers, as big as they are, most likely only represent the tip of the iceberg because surveillance data may underestimate the true burden," he said. In a statement, the organization cautioned that even though syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia are curable, untreated cases can still result in major health issues. These increases raise serious health concerns and show how urgently preventative measures and thorough health education need to be strengthened, according to Ammon. In order to meet the surge, Ammon emphasized that "testing, treatment, and prevention" were essential. The STI rates that are on the rise in Europe necessitate our quick attention and coordinated response. We can reverse the trend by giving testing, treatment, and prevention initiatives top priority, according to Ammon.

Trans fats: what are they? Why are they so dangerous?

Trans fats: what are they? Why are they so dangerous?

Five nations received the first-ever accreditation from the World Health Organization (WHO) for implementing policies to get rid of industrially manufactured trans fats, or iTFA. The food environment for 3.7 billion people, or 46% of the world's population, has significantly improved thanks to the implementation of best practice policies for addressing iTFA in food by 53 countries, up from 6% just five years ago. The World Health Organization said in a statement that these regulations are anticipated to save about 183 000 lives annually. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of WHO, stated that trans fat "has huge health risks but no known health benefit."The World Health Organization (WHO) said in 2018 that trans fats generated industrially would be removed from the world's food supply by 2023. The fact that so many nations have passed laws restricting or outlawing trans fat in food makes us extremely happy. However, enacting a policy is a different matter from just proposing it. I commend Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, and Lithuania for being at the forefront of the global monitoring and enforcement of trans fat legislation. We implore other nations to take note of their example.Trans fats are a kind of unsaturated fat that can be created artificially by the industrial process of hydrogenation, or they can exist naturally. Small levels of naturally occurring trans fats can be found in several animal products, including dairy and meat. But industrially generated trans fats—made when hydrogen is added to vegetable oils to increase their solidity at room temperature—are the main source of concern. Food items are now frequently used as an ingredient in processed and professionally baked goods since this technique extends their shelf life and stability.Trans fats have been linked to numerous health concerns, the most well-known of which being their detrimental effects on cardiovascular health. Trans fats have been demonstrated to concurrently decrease levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good" cholesterol, and increase levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad" cholesterol. This negative change in cholesterol levels elevates the risk of heart attacks and strokes as well as coronary heart disease.Insulin resistance, a state in which the body's cells lose their sensitivity to the effects of insulin, has been linked to trans fats. An increased risk of type 2 diabetes and high blood sugar levels can result from this insulin resistance. Trans fats' pro-inflammatory properties also play a role in the insulin resistance that is seen in people who consume large amounts of these fats. When it comes to consuming trans fats, pregnant women should exercise extra caution. Research has indicated that consuming more trans fats while pregnant may raise the risk of problems like gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia. Trans fats have also been linked to decreased birth weight and negative effects on embryonic development, according to research. There may be a connection between trans fat intake and cognitive decline, according to recent studies. An elevated risk of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia has been linked to a high trans fat diet. While the precise processes underlying this relationship are still being investigated, trans fats' impacts on inflammation and oxidative stress may play a role in brain impairment.Trans fats have a role in weight growth and obesity, however not as much as other health issues. According to certain research, a diet heavy in trans fats may increase the amount of fat deposited in the abdomen, which could exacerbate central obesity, a condition that is known to raise the risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

Is your insufficient sleep preventing you from losing weight?

You don't consume enough protein. An essential vitamin for weight loss is protein. A high-protein diet has been linked to weight loss and a decreased risk of heart disease, according to numerous studies.Eating a balanced diet and exercising frequently lead to weight loss. You could still be wondering, "Why am I not losing weight?" Even if you follow all the "right" procedures, you could not see any weight loss or the intended outcomes. Continue reading to find out why you may not be dropping pounds. You've probably heard the advice countless times: consume fewer calories if you're attempting to lose weight. However, some people might not be aware that eating too little can also be a factor in weight reduction. Lisa Young, Ph.D., R.D., an adjunct nutrition professor at New York University and nutritionist, confirms that lowering calories too much can actually impede weight reduction. "Restricting calories too much almost always backfires," adds Young. There's a good explanation for that: burning calories requires calories in the body. She draws attention to the similarity to trying to start a fire. To light the fireplace, you must set kindling inside of it.Food should be viewed as a delectable, well-earned pleasure, but it should also be seen as your body's kindling—it speeds up your metabolism, which helps you lose weight. According to Young, when you eat enough, the body uses the food as fuel first and then uses the fat it has been storing as fuel. However, excessive calorie restriction puts your body in "starvation mode," which causes it to begin breaking down lean muscle tissue in order to preserve its energy reserves. In the end, this may reduce metabolism and make weight loss more difficult. The National Institutes of Health state that eating too few calories raises the body's level of the stress hormone cortisol, which not only makes it more difficult to lose weight but is also harmful in a number of other ways.Everybody has varying calorie requirements depending on their activity level, gender, and goals. However, the NIH recommends that women take 2000 calories per day to maintain their weight and 1500 calories per day to shed up to one pound per week. Your body finds it more difficult to carry out the fundamental biological processes that keep you healthy and energized when your calorie intake falls too low. Here are a few indicators that you might not be eating enough to lose weight if you're not sure if you're hitting the quantity that works for you.

Uncovering the Connection Between Alcohol Use and Bowel Cancer in 2024:

By increasing public awareness of the risk factors and symptoms of bowel cancer during Cancer Awareness Month in 2024, we can promote early identification and enhance the prognosis for people who are impacted by the illness.Bowel cancer, commonly referred to as colorectal cancer, is a kind of cancer that affects the rectum and the colon, the large intestine. It happens when aberrant cells in the colon or rectum grow out of control, creating a tumor. This tumor poses a serious risk to one's life because it has the ability to infect nearby tissues and spread to other sections of the body. Although the precise origin of bowel cancer is unknown, risk factors for the disease include age, family history, and certain lifestyle choices like smoking and a diet heavy in processed foods. We all know today that alcohol is bad for us; among the dangerous illnesses it causes is cancer, particularly colorectal cancer. When we inquired about the connection between alcohol consumption and bowel cancer, Dr. Vinay Samuel Gaikwad, Director of Surgical Oncology (The Oncology Centre), CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, clarified that alcohol enters the intestinal tract and comes into direct contact with the mucosa lining the intestine, stomach, colon, and rectum. Alcohol decomposes into toxic compounds that can destroy your cells' DNA and expose them to mutations that can lead to cancer. Furthermore, drinking too much alcohol can lead to persistent inflammation in the digestive tract, which is another established risk factor for colon cancer.Alcohol's effects on hormones may also have a role in the development of cancer. Your odds can be increased by even modest alcohol consumption, and the risk increases with increased consumption.Although drinking alcohol increases your risk of colon cancer, not everyone who drinks will get colon cancer. But one of the most effective ways to lower your risk of developing this cancer is to take control of your health and cut back on alcohol.

Govt Pulls Up Indigo, Mumbai Airport After Viral Video Shows Fliers Eating On Tarmac

After a video of passengers eating on the tarmac at Mumbai Airport went viral on social media, the Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia held a meeting with all ministry officials at midnight yesterday. In the early hours on Tuesday, MoCA's Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) issued show cause notices to Indigo and Mumbai Airport.According to the notices, “both Indigo and MIAL were not proactive in anticipating the situation and making the appropriate facilitation arrangements for passengers at the airport”. For instance, “the aircraft was allotted a remote bay C-33 (instead of a Contact Stand - an aircraft parking stand that is suitable for walking passengers to and from an aircraft from an allocated boarding gate), which further added to passenger woes and deprived them the opportunity to avail basic facilities like rest rooms and refreshments at the terminal”.Delayed flights, dense fog and hassled passengers have been grabbing headlines for the past few days in India. And through all this chaos, budget airlines IndiGo has been thrown into the limelight. The domestic carrier is facing flak over several flight disruptions owing to intense fog in Delhi and other places in northern India and its handling of passengers. Now, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo Airlines and Mumbai Airport after a video of passengers eating food on the tarmac spread online on Monday (15 January). In the video that went viral on social media, flyers can be seen seated on the tarmac and eating food next to the parked IndiGo aircraft. The incident sparked safety concerns as the apron is designated for aircraft activities. The ground staff connected the aircraft with the stepladder and the passengers were asked to deboard. As the angry flyers disembarked, they refused to enter the terminal building of the Mumbai airport, HT reported. Many disgruntled passengers demanded the flight be taken directly to Delhi. Videos showed some flyers with their food packets, eating on the apron. An airline official told HT that Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel had to be called to remove them from the tarmac and take them to a safety zone. The flight finally took off for Delhi at 2.39 am on Monday. IndiGo said it was aware of the incident and apologised to the customers, saying it was “currently looking into the incident”.According to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the passengers were “irate” due to the flight delay in Goa and left the aircraft as soon as it landed in Mumbai.
