As it lines up new SUVs, Nissan is skipping India in its global cutbacks.

In India, where the automaker hopes to increase sales by more than fourfold over the next two years, Nissan Motor Corp.'s 15% worldwide layoffs to boost its fortunes following a botched merger with Japanese rival Honda Motor Corp. won't have an effect on its operations.During a virtual press conference on Wednesday, Saurabh Vatsa, managing director of Nissan India, stated, "There will be no disruption to our teams here or our product plans in the country." "We are on schedule to launch new products and accelerate market expansion." The manufacturer of the five-seater sport utility vehicle (SUV) Magnite intends to expand its sales outlets from 159 to 180 during the current fiscal year and launch three more car types over the following two years. The optimism over the third-largest car market in the world contrasts with the job and cost-cutting measures taken by Nissan's global chief executive, Ivan Espinosa, to preserve profits. On May 13, Espinosa declared that it would close seven plants worldwide and lay off 11,000 employees in departments including contract workers, sales, manufacture, administration, and research. Due to a downturn in important markets including the US and China, Nissan's operational profit for the fiscal year that ended on March 31 fell by 88% to $472 million. Because of the uncertainties surrounding US tariffs, the company also declined to provide growth guidance.Because the parties could not agree on the terms, its merger negotiations with Honda Motor likewise fell through in February of this year.Despite this turmoil, Indian business management maintains its optimism. By 2026, the Japanese corporation intends to finance its expansion by investing 700 million euros in the market. According to Vatsa, a new multipurpose vehicle would be introduced in India during the first three months of 2026. By the middle of the year, a five-seater SUV will follow. Nissan imports the X-Trail SUV as fully assembled units (CBUs) and only produces the Magnite domestically.

Audio announcements at bus stops, Braille signage, color-coded tactile tiles, and ramps. Activists claim that all of these may be implemented with a modest investment. One prominent gap that is replicated around the city is the absence of ramps for patients to walk down following surgery at a reputable eye facility in Bengaluru. To assist ladies in safety returning home, Cologne provides night taxi vouchers.

Following the example of numerous other German municipalities, the city is offering €10 coupons for women to spend on nighttime taxis.Inspired by similar programs in other parts of Germany, the German city of Cologne is implementing a pilot scheme wherein women are given night taxi coupons to help them get home securely.According to Cologne's city council, 1,500 vouchers worth €10 each are being given to women and persons of different genders for taxi rides between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. as part of the Women's Night Taxi program. The experiment will run until August 2025, and the vouchers can only be used with Taxi Ruf.Since 2020, the city of Munich has provided women with these night taxi tickets; in response to increasing demand, the subsidy was raised this year from €5 to €10. Since then, the idea has been adopted by other cities like Giessen, Mannheim, and Stuttgart. Many German news agencies and social media users have praised these programs, but some have questioned the vouchers' comparatively low worth, considering that nighttime cabs in big cities typically cost much more than €10.In Germany, similar applications and services that support women's safety have been introduced recently. One such service is a hotline that is manned by volunteers who converse with callers while they are traveling and collect their information to provide to the police in the event of an emergency. According to a 2020 public study done for the nation's BKA federal police, over two-thirds of German women are terrified to ride public transportation after dark. Based on a poll of 1,000 women living in Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, and Munich, research conducted that same year by the non-governmental organization Plan International revealed that 25% of women had been sexually harassed and 5% had been followed, insulted, or threatened while commuting through their cities.

Automotive AI chips are unveiled by Tenstorrent, Hyundai-backed BOS.

December 12, SEOUL (Reuters) - On Thursday, South Korean chip company BOS Semiconductors, supported by Hyundai Motor Group, and Canadian startup Tenstorrent presented artificial intelligence (AI) chips for autonomous driving and in-car infotainment. The need for AI processors to manage the high performance workloads required for complex features has increased as cars progressively transform into "computers on wheels." Park Jae-hong, the founder of BOS Semiconductors, told Reuters that the chips are the first "automotive chiplet AI accelerator" in the industry.According to him, chiplets—small chips integrated into a larger system, similar to LEGO blocks—allow automakers to modify certain features to suit their requirements and cut costs. In order to deliver the "Eagle-N" devices, which will make their debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in January and begin production in late 2026, Park stated that BOS Semiconductors is in negotiations with unnamed German manufacturers. According to him, BOS will carve out a niche market as it takes on chip titans like Qualcomm (QCOM.O) and creates a new page in automotive AI chips. Park previously designed processors for Apple (AAPL.O) and Tesla (TSLA.O) while working for Samsung Electronics (005380.KS), opens new tab. It will be manufactured with 5nm, one of Samsung's cutting-edge manufacturing techniques. Jim Keller, a former Apple chip designer who also managed Tesla's efforts to create an autonomous driving chip, is in charge of Tenstorrent. Investors like Samsung, Hyundai Motor Group, and Jeff Bezos' family office have shown interest in Tenstorrent.

The problem of food security in a world that depends on energy

The problem of food security in a world that depends on energy

In its most recent report on climate and development, the World Bank cautions that "addressing food insecurity and energy poverty is central to achieving global stability, but tackling these issues independently is no longer sufficient." Global stability is being negatively impacted by the interconnected problems of food and energy security, which are determining the course of the twenty-first century. Both systems are under attack: while energy systems deal with geopolitical tensions, aging infrastructure, and the gradual shift away from fossil fuels, food production is hampered by climate change, population increase, and inequality. An even bigger problem arises from their interdependence, though, as agriculture—which is essential to humankind—consumes a lot of energy and contributes to climate change. Given that there are several pivotal moments in the world's history, can weNearly 70% of the freshwater resources in the world are used for agriculture, which also contributes more than 20% of greenhouse gas emissions. A vicious cycle of environmental degradation has been brought about by its reliance on fossil fuels for transportation, irrigation, fertilizer production, and mechanization. Global stability is also threatened by this dependence, which leaves food systems vulnerable to fluctuations in energy prices. The livelihoods of 2.5 billion people are at danger due to the continued disruption of agricultural output caused by rising temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns. Nearly 11.8% of people worldwide experienced extreme food insecurity between 2020 and 2023; by 2028, that number is expected to increase to 956 million.

The Philippines is a significant market that reflects the deep familial ties that exist between our two nations as well as the expanding commercial and tourism opportunities. We are making travel between North America and the Philippines even more convenient for both business and leisure travelers with our vast domestic and transborder network in Vancouver, which is built to effortlessly link to our international flights. November saw a 12% decline in sales of electric vehicles following a festival-driven rush.

India's sales of electric vehicles (EVs) dropped 12% in November 2024 to 191,554 units from 219,021 units in October as the festival-driven spike dwindled. However, according to Vahan data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), sales increased 31% year over year (Y-o-Y) from 145,197 units in November 2023.All of the EV sectors showed signs of deterioration, with month-over-month contractions ranging from 5% to 25% for two-wheelers (e2Ws), three-wheelers (e3Ws), and four-wheelers (e4Ws). The biggest decline was seen in the e4W segment, where sales fell 25% from 11,587 units in October to 8,782 units in November.Volumes in the e2W category, which makes up over 60% of all EV sales, decreased by 15% to 118,944 units in November from 139,787 units the month before. The e3W segment, on the other hand, did somewhat better, with the slightest drop of 5% as sales fell to 63,415 units from 67,182 in October. With a little decrease of less than 1%, Delhi's EV registrations stayed stable in November. November saw 7,091 EV registrations, which is a little less than the 7,141 in October. Although November's numbers indicate a temporary slowdown during the holiday season, the year-over-year gain shows that India's EV adoption trend is still moving forward. In the first 11 months of this year, EV sales nationwide surpassed 1.8 million, demonstrating the increasing popularity of electric vehicles. As the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) restored cargo e3W subsidies under PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) for the balance of the current fiscal year (FY25), this expansion was given a new boost. The subsidy, which was previously discontinued when FY25 yearly targets were met, has been reduced from Rs 50,000 to Rs 25,000 per vehicle.

Tesla overtakes Ford to become Morgan Stanley's "top pick" in the US auto industry.

July 29 (Reuters) - Following Morgan Stanley's designation of Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab as its "top pick" in the U.S. car industry, the most valuable automaker outperformed Ford (F.N), opens new tab, by over 6% on Monday. According to the brokerage, investors are likely to concentrate on companies that handle climate change-related challenges, therefore Tesla's energy sector has the potential to outperform the company's auto business in the future. As legacy automakers scale down their plans for EV expansion, it also anticipates Tesla to establish a more dominating position in the market for zero-emission vehicle credit revenue, for which it recognized around $2,000 per unit in the second quarter. "We estimate Tesla may account for as much as half the credit sales in the market, supporting a 100% margin business for Tesla that may not be anticipated by the investment community at this time," analysts at Morgan Stanley stated. However, Tesla missed Wall Street profits estimates for the second quarter and announced its lowest profit margin in over five years last week. This was due to the Elon Musk-led company offering steep discounts on its vehicles to offset declining demand.
