Following the example of numerous other German municipalities, the city is offering €10 coupons for women to spend on nighttime taxis.Inspired by similar programs in other parts of Germany, the German city of Cologne is implementing a pilot scheme wherein women are given night taxi coupons to help them get home securely.According to Cologne's city council, 1,500 vouchers worth €10 each are being given to women and persons of different genders for taxi rides between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. as part of the Women's Night Taxi program. The experiment will run until August 2025, and the vouchers can only be used with Taxi Ruf.Since 2020, the city of Munich has provided women with these night taxi tickets; in response to increasing demand, the subsidy was raised this year from €5 to €10. Since then, the idea has been adopted by other cities like Giessen, Mannheim, and Stuttgart.
Many German news agencies and social media users have praised these programs, but some have questioned the vouchers' comparatively low worth, considering that nighttime cabs in big cities typically cost much more than €10.In Germany, similar applications and services that support women's safety have been introduced recently. One such service is a hotline that is manned by volunteers who converse with callers while they are traveling and collect their information to provide to the police in the event of an emergency. According to a 2020 public study done for the nation's BKA federal police, over two-thirds of German women are terrified to ride public transportation after dark. Based on a poll of 1,000 women living in Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, and Munich, research conducted that same year by the non-governmental organization Plan International revealed that 25% of women had been sexually harassed and 5% had been followed, insulted, or threatened while commuting through their cities.
