India displays its entire armed might on the 77th Republic Day, with Operation Sindoor taking front stage on the Kartavya Path.
Top national leaders and prominent foreign visitors joined the festivities, which had as their subject 150 years of "Vande Mataram." About 10,000 distinguished guests saw the parade, which combined military might with cultural cohesion. At its 77th Republic Day parade on Monday, January 26, 2026, India put military might front and centre. Kartavya Path was transformed into a sweeping display of missiles, armour, mechanised columns, and combat aircraft, with a keen focus on weapon systems related to Operation Sindoor, the high-intensity military operation carried out in May of last year. The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, Akash air defence system, Suryastra rocket launcher, and Arjun Main Battle Tank were among the major armament systems on exhibit at the start of the military demonstration, which emphasised India's focus on battlefield readiness and domestic defence manufacturing. A large portion of the equipment on exhibit was either used in Operation Sindoor, the confrontation with Pakistan that took place from May 7–10, or it was directly inspired by lessons learnt.A tri-services tableau featuring replicas of key weapon systems used during the operation was a big draw. A glass-cased integrated operational command centre served as its focal point, providing a visual representation of Operation Sindoor's execution through the coordinated use of systems including the S-400 air defence system and BrahMos. Akash and S-400 systems were depicted as offering a protective air-defense shield during the fight, while BrahMos missiles were predicted to perform decisive offensive attacks.Lt. General Bhavnish Kumar, a second-generation officer and General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, led the procession. The Indian Army demonstrated a phased "Battle Array Format," including its airborne component, for the first time. The reconnaissance element included high-mobility reconnaissance vehicles after the historic 61 Cavalry in active battle uniform. Flying in Prahar formation, the domestic Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and its armed counterpart Rudra displayed aerial battlefield shaping.

The government removes the requirement for Sanchar Saathi App pre-installation due to its quick uptake.
The government required the Sanchar Saathi app to be pre-installed on all cellphones in order to give all citizens access to cyber security. The program is safe and designed just to protect citizens from cybercriminals. It protects users while assisting all citizens in "Jan bhagidari" by reporting on such harmful actors and behaviours. The app only serves to protect users, and they are free to uninstall it whenever they choose. The government has clarified this. This software has been downloaded by 1.4 crore people so far, who are adding data on 2000 fraud cases per day. The requirement to install the app was intended to expedite this procedure and make the app easily accessible to less knowledgeable residents, as the number of users has been growing quickly. Six lakh residents have registered to download the app in the last day alone, a tenfold increase in its uptake. This is a confirmation of citizens' faith in the government-provided app for self-defence.The government has chosen not to require pre-installation for mobile manufacturers due to the growing popularity of Sanchar Saathi.

Banking on attention: The need for BFSI marketing to engage customers between UPI and Instagram
The financial services sector is at a pivotal juncture as India moves closer to its Digital Bharat vision, with the expectations of a generation of digital natives reshaping legacy institutions. The FINIXX Summit & Awards 2025, which has as its forward-thinking topic "Reimagining BFSI: Powering Digital Bharat Goals," put this change front and center. In order to examine the changing relationship between technology, trust, and consumer engagement in the BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance) industry, a diverse group of marketing experts, digital strategists, and financial innovators convened for the summit.Experts discussed how rapidly changing consumer behavior is upending traditional marketing strategies in a fascinating panel titled "The Next-Gen BFSI Consumer: Understanding & Engaging Digital-First Audiences." They also discussed what it will take to foster trust, loyalty, and meaningful engagement in an increasingly app-first and attention-deficit world. The panel, which was presided over by Teamology Softech and Media Services Vice President of Growth and Strategy Lawrence Suchitha, included marketing directors from top BFSI institutions: VP of Digital Marketing at HDFC Bank, Aashir Allana AVP of Social Media Marketing at Tata Capital, Nikita Dilip Gupta SBI General Insurance's Head of Marketing and CSR, Rathin Lahiri Varun Mundra, Motilal Oswal Financial Services' Head of Media & Innovations Vishal Lohia, Hybrid Associate Director of Sales."The BFSI landscape has decisively moved from branch-first to app-first engagement," said Lawrence Suchitha, who opened the debate. Consumers of today need digital experiences that are quick, simple, and integrated—all while maintaining the transparency and trust that have traditionally characterized our industry. "The next-gen customer has never seen a passbook or stepped inside a branch," said Aashir Allana of HDFC Bank, emphasizing the point. They view the bank as an app rather than a physical establishment.Allana asserts that modern consumers evaluate their banking experiences by comparing them to Netflix, Amazon, and Zepto rather than other banks. "They want Zepto-level speed and Netflix-level personalization." Despite their impatience and impulsivity, they have a strong research bent. They expect the application procedure to take three minutes, but they will spend hours comparing credit cards. He pointed out that because of this behavioral mismatch, marketers must reach users "somewhere between Instagram and a UPI app."

The Bollywood movie Battle of Galwan has caused controversy due to its factual distortion experts claim that a country's holy area cannot be impacted by over-the-top drama.
On December 27, main actor Salman Khan released the trailer for the Indian film Battle of Galwan, which is set to be released in April 2026 and purports to be based on the 2020 fighting between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan region. The clip sparked outrage on the internet on Monday. Chinese internet users frequently make fun of Salman Khan, who is best known to Chinese audiences as the lead actor in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, for portraying parts that seem too unbeatable, with stories that are too straightforward and excessive visual effects that make the drama seem surreal.Salman Khan plays Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu in the movie, a role that Indian media said attracted Bollywood's attention due to his alleged crucial part in the 2020 Galwan Valley conflict. Bollywood films, at most, offer an emotionally charged and entertaining picture, but no amount of cinematic exaggeration can change history or undermine the PLA's resolve to protect China's sovereign land, according to a Chinese scholar on Monday. The Hindustan Times reported on Sunday that the trailer opens with Salman's voice giving a speech while instructing his soldiers on how to combat the "enemy." He is then shown in the video approaching the "enemy," with his soldiers standing next to him. He is then shown clinging to a stick while the "enemy" rushes in their direction. Salman's character strikes someone with the stick as the video comes to a close. On the other hand, some online users questioned whether the movie had imitated a sequence from Game of Thrones. The movie has also sparked additional controversy on the internet, with users pointing to things like extras' outfits and looks, actors' hairstyles that don't fit their military roles or the storyline's suggestion of extreme cold, and—most importantly—a depiction of events that isn't true. About 200 Indian soldiers valiantly defended their land against a force of 1,200 Chinese soldiers on June 15, 2020, according to certain local media, notably India Today, which has promoted the movie as being based on the events that occurred between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan region.

Despite Ranveer Singh's apologies, a second complaint was made against him for imitating daivas and offending the Tulu community's sacred feelings by discussing Rishab Shetty's Kantara.
Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh was accused of violating the Tulu customary spirit-worship depicted in Rishab Shetty's Kantara flicks, according to a complaint filed by Bengaluru-based High Court counsel Prashanth Methal. This is the second complaint made against the actor, who in this case expressed regret. Also Read: Rishab Shetty had discouraged Ranveer Singh against copying Daivas before he did it on the stage at IFFI.The Hindu also stated that counsel Prashanth Methal submitted a formal complaint at the High Grounds Police Station alleging that the actor had mocked the revered daiva custom during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) closing ceremony in Goa on November 28.The complaint furthered claimed that Ranveer had done a parody of the Panjuluri/Guliga daiva who is worshipped in the coastal Karnataka region. The counsel was also cited noting that the performance was nasty, insulting, and hilarious and a huge source of injury to the Hindu feelings particularly among the Tulu population. The complaint additionally alleged that the Ranveer dubbed the daiva a female spirit, which the advocate regarded to as blasphemous and had been purposefully disrespectful. He instructed the police to start prosecuting Ranveer.Ranveer has responded by apologising to the netizens on social media, after a series of criticisms on the internet after the viral video of him copying the daivas. “My intention was to highlight Rishab's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular sequence in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration,” he wrote. In addition, Ranveer apologised for hurting people's feelings and said, "I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition, and belief in our country." If I've harmed anyone's sensibilities, I genuinely apologise.” The behaviour that disrespected the Tulu community happened when Ranveer went to meet with Rishab at the closing ceremony of IFFi, and replicated the daivas although the Kannada actor urged him not to.

The Union Budget 2024 may see the government loosen the 45-day payment restriction for MSMEs.
According to insiders, the government may decide to loosen the rule requiring MSMEs to be paid for goods and services within 45 days of the purchase in order to deter big corporations from exploring alternative sources of funding This could be announced in the budget, which is expected to be delivered on July 23.Overview. The government is thinking about easing the 45-day payment deadline for MSMEs in an effort to keep big businesses from looking for alternative suppliers. It is possible that this modification to Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act would be disclosed in the forthcoming July 23 Budget. As per the Finance Act 2023's introduction of Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act, a larger company may face greater taxes if it fails to pay an MSME within the stipulated timeframe of 45 days for written agreements. This is because the firm cannot deduct the payment from its taxable income. The amendment was introduced to allow MSMEs to receive payments on time, but many of them expressed fear, according to sources. They said they were afraid that large corporations might ask their vendors to give up their MSME registration in order to do business with them, or they might shift their sourcing requirements to larger firms in an effort to protect their interests.

When you chew a piece of ginger every day for sixty days, your body experiences this.
Strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can be found in ginger. However, what would happen if a person chewed a piece of ginger every day for sixty days? When we asked Dr. Amreen Sheikh, chief nutritionist at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, about it, he replied that it increases circulation, relaxes the airways, and progressively lessens throat inflammation. Many patients report decreased bloating, improved digestion, and fewer coughs after six to eight weeks. Ginger can ease the inner lining of the airways and provide general lung comfort for people who are susceptible to seasonal respiratory symptoms, according to Sheikh.Yes, but with reasonable expectations, Sheikh argued. Unlike medication, ginger does not "open the lungs." Rather, it operates subtly. It can aid those who frequently experience irritation from pollutants, relieve moderate wheezing from cold weather, and clear congestion in the throat. Additionally, by loosening mucus, its warming impact facilitates its expulsion during an illness. Ginger can help with long-term lung conditions like COPD or asthma, but it should never take the place of prescription medication, Sheikh said. While using ginger on a daily basis is generally safe, Sheikh pointed out that excessive use can cause oral irritation, cause acidity in those who are sensitive, or slightly thin the blood. Before developing a habit, people who take blood thinners or have gastritis or acid reflux should speak with a doctor. A tiny portion is more than sufficient; moderation is crucial," Sheikh stated.

Cough syrup deaths: TNFDA probe reveals Coldrif manufacturer's shortcomings
According to CDSCO sources, the investigation into the Kanchipuram-based Coldrif cough syrup producer, which was connected to child fatalities in Madhya Pradesh, has shown shortcomings in the Tamil Nadu Food and Drug Administration's enforcement of fundamental regulatory standards. They said that Sresan Pharma, which was granted a license by the Tamil Nadu Food and Drug Administration (TNFDA) in 2011, carried on operating undetected for more than ten years in spite of its inadequate infrastructure and many infractions of national drug safety regulations.According to the sources, a recent examination by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) revealed the unit's terrible conditions and complete disregard for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). "The CDSCO has not participated in any of Sresan Pharma's audits. This company was not included in any of the CDSCO databases since the CDSCO was not involved and the state FDA did not provide the CDSCO with any information on it, according to a source.Rule 84AB of the D and C Rules mandates that manufacturers update all of their certified items on the "Sugam" site, according to another source at the CDSCO.In order to facilitate improved monitoring, the regulation was notified to create a national database of all the authorized items in the nation. Why it's never a good idea to do a DIY chemical peel
People all over the world are enamored with the idea of having flawlessly clear skin, whether they have glazed or glass skin. They are using expert treatments, such as wine baths and salmon sperm facials, in addition to skincare and makeup to reach their goals. In recent years, chemical peels have been increasingly popular among these. However, as members of the social media generation, it appears like there is a do-it-yourself solution for practically anything. By combining various acids, many people have even begun trying chemical peels at home.Even while your nani-dadi ke nuskhe were safe enough to try at home, trying a chemical peel is a very different matter and might cause significant skin damage. But first, comprehend...According to Dr. Ruben Bhasin Passi, dermatology consultant at CK Birla Hospital in Gurugram, "Chemical peels are skin treatments that use acid-based solutions to exfoliate the outer layers of the skin," India Today reports. According to her, these treatments function by encouraging cell turnover, breaking down dead skin cells, and boosting the creation of collagen.Peels can treat problems like acne, hyperpigmentation, fine wrinkles, and uneven texture, depending on their strength (light, medium, or deep). "While deeper peels like trichloroacetic acid penetrate deeper for more dramatic results, light peels like alpha-hydroxy acids target the epidermis," Dr. Passi continues.Additionally, according to Dr. Shifa Yadav, dermatology and cosmetology consultant at Artemis Hospitals in Gurugram, this procedure aids in the skin's regeneration of new, healthier cells, giving it a smoother, more even complexion. It is frequently used in skin care clinics to improve the appearance and feel of skin, but in order to prevent irritation or injury, it must be applied and maintained properly.Even though experimenting with at-home hacks can be enjoyable, practical, and even economical, it's crucial to keep in mind that not all conditions can be safely treated using do-it-yourself methods. To prevent long-term damage, certain beauty procedures—particularly those involving potent chemicals—require professional knowledge and expertise.According to Dr. Vidushi Jain, medical head of Dermalinks in Delhi-NCR, homemade peels frequently employ the incorrect acid concentrations without taking the safety of the skin into account. They lack the professional followup that such procedures require, which can lead to burns, infections, uneven pigmentation, and delayed healing. "Many kits have strong acids like TCA or glycolic acid that can harm the skin," says Dr. Yadav.

About 50 out of 71 candidates on the BJP's initial list for Bihar were repeat candidates; senior ministers and deputy chief ministers
For the Bihar Assembly elections next month, the BJP on Tuesday unveiled its initial list of 71 candidates, keeping a number of its current ministers and MLAs but adding fresh names in a few constituencies.About half of the 71 names are repeat candidates who ran in the 2020 elections, such as Vinod Narayan Jha (Benipatti), Pawan Jaiswal (Dhaka), Rana Randhir Singh (Madhuban), Awadhesh Singh (Hajipur), and Sanjay Saraogi (Darbhanga).Outgoing deputy chief ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha will run in the next Bihar assembly election from the Tarapur and Lakhisarai assembly constituencies, respectively, according to the Bharatiya Janata Party's first list of candidates released on Tuesday. Election results for the 243-seat Bihar legislature will be revealed on November 14 after two phases of voting on November 6 and 11.The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal-United (JDU) are running for 101 seats apiece, while the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), led by Chirag Paswan, is running for 29 seats. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) finalized their seat-sharing formula for the Bihar assembly elections on Sunday. Jitan Ram Manjhi's Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), also known as HAM(S), and Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) will compete for six seats each.As the party ran for 115 seats in the 2020 Bihar assembly election, Nitish Kumar's JD(U) saw a decline in the final seat-sharing results. As regional tensions rise, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan sign a mutual defense treaty.
In the face of increased regional tensions, Saudi Arabia and nuclear-armed Pakistan have formally inked a mutual defense pact, a step that greatly fortifies a decades-long security cooperation. The improved defense relations coincide with Gulf Arab nations' growing skepticism about the US's capacity to uphold their long-standing security guarantee, which was exacerbated by Israel's attack in Qatar last week. When questioned about the timing of the deal, a senior Saudi official stated, "This agreement is the result of years of discussions." "This is an institutionalization of long-standing and profound cooperation between our two countries, not a reaction to particular nations or events." Arab nations were incensed when Israel attempted to murder Hamas leadership officials in Doha with airstrikes while they were debating a ceasefire proposal that Qatar is mediating. In a complicated region, the agreement on Wednesday may change the strategic equation. In an effort to address long-standing security concerns, Washington's allies, the Gulf monarchs, have worked to stabilize their relations with Israel and Iran. However, the war in Gaza has completely upended the area, and twice in a single year, Israel and Iran have directly attacked the Gulf state of Qatar. Speaking under anonymity, the top Saudi official agreed that relations with India, Pakistan's competitor and another nuclear-armed state, must be balanced."We have a stronger relationship with India than we have ever had. We shall keep strengthening our bond and do everything in our power to promote regional harmony. The official responded, "This is a comprehensive defensive agreement that encompasses all military means," when asked if Pakistan would be required to give Saudi Arabia a nuclear umbrella under the accord. After signing the deal, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto ruler of the kingdom, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif were seen embracing on public television. Field Marshal Asim Munir, the head of Pakistan's army and considered the most powerful individual in the nation, was present."This agreement, which reflects the shared commitment of both nations to enhance their security and to achieving security and peace in the region and the world, aims to develop aspects of defense cooperation between the two countries and strengthen joint deterrence against any aggression," read a statement from the office of the prime minister of Pakistan. "Any aggression against one of the countries will be deemed an aggression against both, according to the agreement."

An Overview of the UPSC Issue | SCO Summit 2025 and India: Four Crucial Questions for Prelims and Mains
By scheduling two significant events in one week—the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in the northeastern city of Tianjin and a Victory Day parade in Beijing's Tiananmen Square commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II—Beijing has entered diplomatic high season as summer draws to a close. It's difficult to overlook the symbolism. The events convey a clear message: in contrast to the Western narrative of a free international order led by the United States, China is positioning itself as the standard-bearer of a multipolar world dominated by the Global South. Both occasions are expertly produced political plays that combine military prowess, diplomatic posture, and historical narrative. Additionally, China has two audiences in mind: it wants to project power and influence in its neighborhood and beyond while simultaneously boosting domestic public morale. For a long time, Chinese strategists have emphasized that the goal of foreign policy is to establish an external environment that supports economic growth at home. Originating with previous Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, this core idea has evolved into the current leadership's catchphrase for negotiating a turbulent global landscape. The two events' participating nations attest to China's continued strategic emphasis on Asia. The majority of major Asian nations are represented among the more than 30 heads of state and international organizations taking part, with the notable exception of Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and the Philippines—all of whom are strong security partners of the United States.

Chinese Envoy: U.S. Tariffs Threaten Stability, Demand Response
In a recent address, China's Ambassador to the United States warned that remaining silent in the face of increasing U.S. tariffs would only encourage further pressure. The statement comes amid growing tensions over trade policies, with the U.S. implementing new tariffs on Chinese goods in what it says is a response to unfair trade practices and national security concerns. The ambassador urged dialogue and mutual respect, emphasizing that cooperation, rather than confrontation, benefits both nations. He suggested that escalating trade barriers harm not just the economies involved but also global supply chains and ordinary consumers who bear the cost of such measures. While the U.S. maintains that its tariffs are necessary to protect domestic industries and maintain fair competition, Chinese officials argue that these steps are politically motivated and harmful to long-term stability. The ambassador's remarks appear to reflect a broader effort by China to rally international support against what it views as economic coercion. As both countries continue to shape global economic trends, the tone and direction of their engagement will have wide-reaching implications—not only for governments and businesses but for millions of people whose daily lives are touched by the trade between the two powers.

Google parent Alphabets share price drops 6 percentas ad revenue declines and capex increases.
Wall Street was let down by Alphabet on Tuesday when the company revealed that this year it would be spending more on things like servers that fuel artificial intelligence, despite the fact that holiday-season advertising sales fell short of forecasts. After hours trading saw a 6% decline in Alphabet shares. Alphabet's dominant businesses, Google and YouTube, have been up against competition for advertising budgets from other online platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Amazon.com, all against the backdrop of conflicting U.S. economic indications. The company's fourth-quarter ad revenue increased to $65.5 billion from $59.0 billion the previous year, with retail sales being a bright light. Based on LSEG statistics, that fell short of analysts' average projection of $66.1 billion.According to Thomas Monteiro, an analyst at Investing.com, "Alphabet's disappointing ad revenue numbers suggest that corporations worldwide are still uncertain about the pace of interest rate cuts from global central banks."Google, the creator of the technology that laid the groundwork for the current AI boom, is engaged in conflict with two major competitors in the market: OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, and Microsoft, which supports it.Microsoft's Azure grew faster in the same period that Google Cloud's revenue exceeded Wall Street forecasts and growth resumed with a boost from AI.Such AI demands significant investments in data centers, servers, and research. Alphabet's capital expenditures surged by 45% to $11 billion, the biggest level in years. During a conference call with analysts, Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat stated that this year's capital expenditures will be significantly higher than those of 2023.Technology companies have been reducing staff and shutting down non-priority initiatives in order to save expenses. According to Porat, Alphabet anticipates spending $700 million on severance-related costs in the first quarter.Google is giving its ChatGPT competitor Bard access to a potent model suite dubbed Gemini. A agreement to invest up to $2 billion in the well-known AI firm Anthropic was also made, as it attempts to lure clients away from more established cloud rivals Microsoft and Amazon. Additionally, it is giving advertisers control over Gemini to maintain their financial support for Google's search division. However, because ad purchasers may be deterred by geopolitical and economic uncertainties, AI's boost to advertising may still be some way off. Alphabet's AI initiatives are being investigated by the US, and Google is preparing to file an appeal of a significant antitrust lawsuit that it lost. Alphabet reported $20.7 billion in profit for the fourth quarter."BETTER THAN AN AGENT" During the analyst call, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the advancements made with AI in various areas of the company, such as posing new queries that Google can skillfully handle. Since OpenAI's November 2022 announcement of ChatGPT, which demonstrated to the public how so-called generative AI can create fresh text and graphics with a single command, a frenzy has engulfed the technology industry. The possibility of AI "agents" managing human demands with more autonomy has also increased with advancements. When asked about Google Assistant, the company's digital assistant, Pichai stated that artificial intelligence (AI) "allows us to act more like an agent over time" and "go beyond answers and follow through for users even more." Investor interest in Google Cloud has increased as Alphabet concentrates on artificial intelligence. The segment turned a quarterly profit for the first time last year, but as clients reduced their cloud expenditure, sales growth slowed. While Google has promoted competing technologies, Microsoft has been a formidable foe, integrating AI into its cloud and productivity suite, which has long been adopted by corporations.Pichai informed investors that cloud expansion was being encouraged by generative AI. With $9.2 billion in sales for the most recent quarter, Google Cloud exceeded analyst projections of $8.9 billion. While it was less than the 32% growth in the same quarter last year, cloud revenue growth had resumed its upward trajectory from the previous quarter, reaching 25.7%. Azure, Microsoft's cloud platform, saw a 30% increase in sales, the company announced on Tuesday.LSEG data shows that Alphabet's total revenue for the quarter ended December 31 was $86.3 billion, versus projections of $85.3 billion.

Paytm Payments Bank Can Offer Services, Including Wallet, After Feb 29: RBI
Customers can, however, continue to utilise balances from their accounts, including savings and current "without restriction (and) up to their available" limit, the Reserve Bank order said.New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday barred Paytm Payments Bank Ltd from accepting deposits or allowing credit transactions, or top-ups, in customer accounts or prepaid instruments - such as wallets and FASTags - linked to those accounts, after February 29.In addition, the nodal accounts of Paytm's parent company, One97 Communications Ltd., and Paytm Payments Bank Ltd., or PBBL, have been terminated by the central bank. The RBI's order cited "persistent non-compliances and continued material supervisory concerns in the bank" that were flagged after a comprehensive audit of its systems by external parties. However, sources have told NDTV the Paytm app will continue to operate as normal, except for those linked to the Paytm Bank. These will only operate till February 29, or till the available balance is exhausted. Neither the company nor its founder/CEO, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, have responded so far. All of this follows a March 2022 order in which PBBL was directed to stop taking onboard new customers "with immediate effect".Essentially the RBI action is against the banking operations of Paytm, meaning customers can continue to use Paytm as a digital payment option so long as their account is linked to an external bank.In December, One97 Communication laid off hundreds of employees across verticals after it began using AI, or Artificial Intelligence, to automate certain processes in a bid to up cost-cutting.

Nitishs Return to NDA: Its Wrong to Conclude a Cakewalk for the BJP in Bihar
“The BJP, of course, has got psychological advantage by bringing the Bihar CM and Janata Dal (United) president from the INDIA bloc, of which he was the architect. But there is a palpable anger among the people against Nitish. The BJP will have to pay the price for accepting him back to its fold,” the election strategist turned activist, Prashant Kishor said.Kishore predicted, “Irrespective of whatever alliance Nitish contests with, his party won’t be able to win more than 20 seats in the assembly polls.” Kishore, who is on his Jan Suraj padyatra in north Bihar’s Begusarai district these days, has been advancing this argument in his speeches as well as his interviews with the media. The widely held ‘assumption’ that the BJP’s victory is a “done deal” particularly after Nitish jumping to its side has subsumed the likely troubles that the Hindutva party might face in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, expected in April-May, this year. The first and foremost trouble which the BJP is all set to face is over sharing of seats. Nitish’s JDU and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) of Ram Vilas Paswan (alive then) were the part of the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 2019. The BJP and the JDU had shared 17 seats each, sparing six seats for the LJP. The NDA had won 39 seats—BJP-17, JDU-16 and LJP-6. Now, besides Nitish’s JDU, the BJP has Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP), Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Aawam Morcha – Secular (HAMS), Chirag Paswan’s LJP and his uncle Pashupatinath Paras’s Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP) are in the NDA. Creating a buzz in the name of Ram temple and around Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘persona’, the BJP cadres are clamouring for more seats than what they had contested in Bihar in 2019. The RLSP, the HAMS, the LJP and the RLJP, which have been with the BJP from before Nitish’s JDU has joined it, are, obviously, expecting their share of seats. There are only 40 seats in the state to share with. How many seats the BJP will keep in its share and how much will it spare for its five other partners? Needless to say that there is an apparent disquiet in the camps of these parties on Nitish’s return in the NDA; their lack of enthusiasm was obvious at Nitish’s ninth swearing-in as the CM at Patna’s Raj Bhavan on Saturday-January 28.

Global Corruption Index 2023: India Ranks 93rd Out of 180 Countries, Was 85th in 2022
The index comes at a time when the Union government run by the Bharatiya Janata Party is targeting only opposition leaders through its investigating agencies – ostensibly to weaken their public appeal before the crucial 2024 general elections and project the INDIA alliance as corrupt.Significantly, of India’s 28 states, BJP and its allies were in power in 17 in 2023. As per the country-wise corruption perception index (CPI) of the report put together by Transparency International (TI), a noted platform that works in over a hundred countries to fight corruption and promote transparency in public life, India has slipped from 85th position in 2022 to 93rd in 2023. In all, TI ranks 180 countries in terms of their perceived levels of public sector corruption in a scale of 0 to 100; the perceived levels are drawn from consultations with experts and people in business in the respective countries. Those closer to the scale of 100 are perceived to be highly corrupt. While India stands at 93, the country’s overall score for 2023 stands at 39, one point lower than 2022. About India, the TI report states, “India (39) shows score fluctuations small enough that no firm conclusions can be drawn on any significant change. However, ahead of the elections, India sees further narrowing of civic space, including through the passage of a bill that could be a ‘grave threat to fundamental rights’.”Among India’s neighbours, China is shown at a score of 42 (against India’s 39) but the report cautions that the country’s heavy reliance on punishment rather than institutional checks on power raises doubts over the long-term effectiveness” of its anti-corruption measures. China, which has been grabbing headlines for cracking down on corruption, has punished over 3.7 million public officials in the last 10 years.

Nasscom wants government to let overseas Indian startups list directly
India-focused startups incorporated overseas should be able to list on the domestic stock exchanges within the existing externalised structures, Indian industry body National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) has suggested as part of its Union Budget 2024-25 recommendations.Out of 139 startups who participated in a survey conducted by Nasscom, approximately 16.5% of Indian-origin startups have externalised legal structures and would consider raising equity capital through public listing in India if the regulations are amended to allow for a direct listing, it said.Out of 139 startups who participated in a survey conducted by Nasscom, approximately 16.5% of Indian-origin startups have externalised legal structures and would consider raising equity capital through public listing in India if the regulations are amended to allow for a direct listing, it said.India-focused startups incorporated overseas should be able to list on the domestic stock exchanges within the existing externalised structures, Indian industry body National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) has suggested as part of its Union Budget 2024-25 recommendations. Previously, the industry body had reached out to the markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) and the finance ministry seeking a viable framework for such listing. This is the first time it has been part of the Budget suggestions, said Ashish Aggarwal, head of public policy, Nasscom.Existing rules permit only domestically incorporated firms from listing in India. The move could pave the way for reducing considerable tax liabilities for both the company and its investors in the event of ‘reverse flipping’ or moving registration to India. For the Budget, it has recommended to “set up an expert task force, with participation from the relevant government departments, regulators, industry representatives and legal experts, to recommend a comprehensive set of measures to make direct listing an attractive option for Indian origin foreign start-ups to consider.”

iPhone 16 may not feature any major design changes, bring new gen AI features
It's only been a few months since Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 series at its Wonderlust event in California. However, there have been a lot of rumours about the iPhone 16. The iPhone 16, like other iPhone models before it, is expected to debut in September this year.According to a recent post by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on Medium, Apple is unlikely to make any major design changes to the iPhone 16 this year. Furthermore, the company is not expected to make any major generative AI-based changes to its ecosystem until at least the launch of iPhone 17 in 2025. “It is expected that Apple will not launch new iPhone models with significant design changes and the more comprehensive/differentiated GenAI ecosystem/applications until 2025 at the earliest. Until then, it will likely harm Apple’s iPhone shipment momentum and ecosystem growth." Kuo wrote in a blogpost. Notably, previous reports have suggested that the iPhone 16 may follow a similar camera design to the iPhone 12, which isn't likely to be a major design change and seems compatible with the usual changes Apple makes every year.Other rumours about the iPhone 16 include the addition of a dedicated camera button, which will make it easier to take videos and photos. The iPhone 16 Pro series is also expected to have a larger display than the current generation, with the iPhone 16 likely to have a 6.3-inch display and the 16 Pro a 6.9-inch display.Kuo's blog post noted that Apple is likely to see a decline in iPhone shipments in 2024, due to the increasing demand for AI and foldable smartphones. Meanwhile, Kuo added that the decline in iPhone shipments in China could be a direct result of competition from Huawei.

Tata Curvv final design revealed via patent image
The Curvv SUV will be Tata Motors' first all-new model launch in 2024 and will be the brand's answer to the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in India. While the Curvv SUV was shown to the general public in concept and close to production form earlier, its final design has now been revealed, thanks to a patent image that has surfaced online. The patent image confirms that the Curvv SUV’s final design will be almost similar to the concept shown at last year’s Auto Expo in New Delhi. It gets a tall bumper with a wide air dam; the inserts on the air dam and grille are quite similar to the ones seen on the Harrier and Safari facelifts. The vertical headlight placement on the Curvv is also similar to these two SUVs, which will not only give it a familiar look but will also help in using common parts. The Curvv concept’s stylish alloy wheel design also seems to be making it to the production model as seen on the patent image. The SUV will get flush door handles, which have been seen not just on the concept but also on various test mules. This feature is already seen on the Mahindra XUV700 but will be a first for Tata. At the back, the Curvv maintains its coupe-link silhouette and will be the first SUV coupe to enter the midsize SUV space in India. As we've reported earlier, the Curvv EV will be the first to go on sale in the coming months, with the diesel and turbo-petrol variants – in that order – launching in the second half of this year.Tata Curvv EV series production will commence around April this year at Tata Motors’ Ranjangaon plant near Pune. Tata Motors has set an annual sales target of around 48,000 units for the Curvv SUV, with 12,000 units expected from the Curvv EV.

Hero Xoom lineup to expand
Hero launched the Xoom 110 just last year, but now the Xoom lineup is slated to grow with the arrival of two new scooters – the Xoom 125R and the Xoom 160. Both broke cover first at EICMA 2023, and made their India debut at the recently concluded Hero World event. Let's start with the Xoom 160 as that is something that we rarely see in this category. With a mixture of both maxi-scooter and ADV styling elements, the Xoom 160’s design is sure to stand out of the crowd. It's also a feature-rich machine with keyless ignition and remote seat opening, and also has Hero’s patented i3s stop-start technology. The big talking point here is that it is powered by a liquid-cooled, 156cc, single-cylinder engine that puts out 14hp at 8,000rpm and 13.7Nm at 6,500rpm. When it does launch, the Xoom 160 will be one of only two scooters available in this category to feature a liquid-cooled engine. Underpinnings are fairly run-of-the-mill with a telescopic fork and twin shock absorbers. With its 14-inch wheels and a 141kg kerb weight, the Xoom 160 will likely be a size larger than most scooters out there in its class and its closest rival upon launch will be the Yamaha Aerox 155 (Rs 1.47 lakh). The Xoom 125R is a fairly conventional 125cc scooter, apart from the fact that it runs on 14-inch wheels. Its styling is an evolution of the Xoom 110’s design, although it does get some premium touches like sequential LED indicators (rarely seen on a scooter) and a fully-digital dash. The dash features Bluetooth connectivity thus enabling turn-by-turn navigation, call and SMS alerts.Powering the Xoom 125R is an air-cooled, 124.6cc, single-cylinder engine making 9.5hp and 10.14Nm. In the competitive 125cc scooter space, the Xoom 125R will rival the TVS NTorq (Rs 84,636-1.05 lakh), Suzuki Avenis (Rs 92,800) and Honda Dio 125 (Rs 83,400- 91,300) at launch.

HUF like benefits for single mothers and more, what women want
With a few hours to go for Union Finance Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget 2024 speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu have already set the tone of the Budget session and made it clear that ‘Nari Shakti’ will be the primary focus. As part of the CNBC-TV18 Budget Ballot initiative we placed ballot boxes at select locations across cities, and thousands of pleas and suggestions came in. A clear indication from women is that they want to achieve financial independence, and therefore want more initiatives for their education and financial security to reach that milestone. As of January 2022, females accounted for 48.04% of India’s total population of 1.42 billion, according to World Bank data. To understand what nearly half of the country’s population wants (and also the other half), CNBC-TV18 engaged with India's citizens for insight into their Budget wish list this year. Not that the government hasn’t already introduced many schemes, including PM Jan Dhan Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Mahila Shakti Kendra and Mission Shakti among the many others, ensuring women empowerment is still a long road. Pune’s Sushma Arvind, who participated in the CNBC-TV18 Budget Ballot, has suggested to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman that there must be a provision introduced in the Budget that allows single mothers to avail income tax benefits similar to those under the Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) provision. She suggests coining the facility Women Run Family (WRF). (An HUF is taxed separately from its members. Therefore, it can claim deductions or exemptions allowed under the tax laws separately.)She also wants an additional discount or special reduced income tax rates for women who have already worked and paid taxes for more than 15 years.Similarly, Bengaluru resident Asish has requested the FM to allow direct tax filing “jointly” by a married couple so that tax deductions of two individuals can be availed on a combined income.

Confident new Parliament building will have productive dialogues, says President Murmu
“We anticipate the Interim Budget 2024 to align with the government’s mission of uplifting the underprivileged and urge the government to introduce beneficiary schemes, especially as the General Sabha election approaches, focusing on the socio-economic empowerment of the marginalised.”“We hope for policies supporting our growth, particularly in Tier 2, 3, and 4 cities, aiming to integrate rural communities into the formal banking system.Incentivising FinTech dedicated to empowering SMEs through financial and technical interventions would mark a significant stride. Addressing loan disbursement including loans against gold/jewellery, we recommend regulations fostering collaboration between traditional banks and digital lenders for accessible loans,” Anuj Arora, Co-founder & COO, SahiBandhu Gold Loans said.“As we approach Budget 2024, we anticipate a continued focus on advancing India’s digital public infrastructure, a key pillar for realising the $5 trillion economy dream. I look forward to enhanced government initiatives fostering financial inclusion benefiting ‘Bharat’, not just India,” said Sarvjeet Virk, Co-founder & MD, Finvasia. “On the tech front, I hope to see further progress in establishing AI Centres of Excellence. I also expect more policies to enable public-private partnership to boost end-use-cases of generative and predictive AI and increase its adoption in India. The fintech industry, as usual, will be the flag bearer of innovation,” Virk added. “The landscape of online new car sales has experienced a substantial surge over the past 4-5 years, driven by an increasing preference for consumers buying cars digitally. We are expecting some key developments from the budget like a reduction in the GST rate that will support home-grown players in investing in newer technologies for enhanced mobility offerings on a global scale. Then, re-evaluation of the import structure for electric vehicles is also sought to address disparities in GST rates, providing a much-needed boost to the start-up community through government loans and investments. As an online new car market player, we are closely monitoring these developments, recognizing their potential impact on the electric vehicle market. Our commitment is to adapt our platform to the evolving landscape, ensuring that our customers have access to the latest and most sustainable automobile options. We look forward to the Union Budget introducing measures that not only support the growth of the electric vehicle industry but also contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly future,” Gaurav Aggarwal, CEO and Founder, CarLelo, A Capri Loans Venture said.

Interim Budget 2024: Expectations for Indirect Taxation
Given that there is a high priority on increasing participation in global value chains, the expectations from this budget from an Indirect Tax standpoint could be around improving the global trade ecosystem, simplification and streamlining of compliance framework, policy measures to cultivate local competencies and exports as well as focus on simplification and certainty in tax policy. The 2024 Interim Budget is set to be presented in Parliament on February 1. The Manufacturing and Other Operations in Warehouse Regulations (MOOWR) Scheme has been conceived to encourage domestic manufacturing to participate in the global value chain by offering duty deferment and location flexibility. The changes made through the Finance Act, 2023, which requires payment of Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) and Compensation cess on goods stored in a warehouse for manufacturing, seem to have been an intent to restrict the benefit to customs duty other than IGST and Compensation cess. This change allows for sector-specific carve-outs and at present such a carve-out has been made for electronics and semiconductor manufacturing sectors. Such change in the scheme seems to have raised uncertainty for manufacturers with expansion plans and importing capital goods. To bolster manufacturing and to support export competitiveness, this uncertainty may be addressed in this Interim Budget. Given the intent of the GST system to have a seamless flow of credits across the value chain, degree of compliance by way of e-invoicing, and buoyant tax collections, the fragments of the erstwhile regime with respect to credit restrictions may be reconsidered. Reducing credit barriers, particularly those pertaining to infrastructure, employee-related expenditures, and construction or immovable property could perhaps benefit businesses by unlocking working capital. Like some of the erstwhile state Value Added Tax (VAT) legislations, a mechanism for allowing refund of unutilised GST input tax credits balance at the conclusion of each fiscal year could be explored, regardless of exports or refund towards inverted duty structure.
