Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has hardly yet set foot on a podium. One of such endeavours is no longer the Commonwealth Games. Under the watchful eye of the great Kunjarani Devi, a modest teenager came in Glasgow in 2014 and won a silver medal. Twelve years later, with medals from the Olympics, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games already in her cabinet, she returned to the same city as one of India's most accomplished athletes. It was expected that she would win the CWG gold medal for the third time in a row. She finished 22 kg ahead of the silver medallist, lifting 190 kg even when she wasn't performing at her best. Beyond the numbers, though, she showed a side that is rarely seen: she was using her words to boost the spirits of her countrymen rather than lifting weights. Mirabai became a vital component of India's support network with head coach Vijay Sharma.

She gave an explanation of why that mentorship position has come naturally to her after her return to India on Sunday.
