Why a political dispute has been sparked by Punjabs reversal on a new rural jobs initiative

The Punjab government has come under political criticism after it decided to implement the Centre’s Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) scheme, despite previously opposing it in the Punjab Assembly. Earlier, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had argued that the new rural employment programme would weaken the existing rural job guarantee system and place a greater financial burden on the state. The controversy began because the government’s latest notification appears to reverse its earlier position. Opposition parties, including the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and BJP, have questioned why the government changed its stand. They allege that the decision contradicts the Assembly’s earlier resolution and have demanded an explanation for the sudden policy shift.

The Punjab government has defended its decision, saying the matter is linked to the Centre and rural development funding. Rural Development Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond has accused opposition parties of using the issue for political purposes rather than focusing on the welfare of rural workers. The government has maintained that its priority is to ensure employment opportunities and continued development in villages. The issue has also led to protests by some workers' groups and has become a major political debate in the state. Opposition leaders say the government should clearly explain why it opposed the scheme earlier but is now implementing it. With both the ruling party and the opposition defending their positions, the rural jobs scheme has become an important political issue in Punjab.
