On Monday, December 16, 2024, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman claimed that the Congress party has boldly aided the "family" and the "dynasty" by amending the Constitution in significant ways.Ms. Sitharaman criticized the Congress for imposing Emergency, stating that the 42nd Constitutional Amendment legislation was emphasized by the then-president on December 18, 1976. The Lok Sabha's tenure was prolonged during the Emergency without adequate explanation. After the whole opposition was imprisoned during the extended time, the Constitution was amended."That was a completely invalidated process," she continued. In the Lok Sabha, only five lawmakers opposed the bill. Nobody in the Rajya Sabha was against it. The Finance Minister said that the adjustments were made to protect the powerful rather than to advance democracy. The Constitution was the subject of a two-day debate in the Lok Sabha on December 16 and 17, 2024, with a particular emphasis on its historical relevance and its influence on the country's governance and international status. In her first address in the Lok Sabha, Priyanka Gandhi claimed that if the 2024 Lok Sabha elections hadn't taken place, the BJP would have altered the Constitution. Speaking about politicizing the legacy of the Constitution, Rajnath Singh criticized the Congress party's attempts to place all the blame for the writing of the Indian Constitution on one political party.

Live update on farmers' protests: On Friday, December 6, a Punjabi "jatha" (group) of farmers, led by the non-political Samyukta Kisan Morcha and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, intends to march from the Shambhu border to the Delhi Parliament. A legal guarantee of the minimum support price for crops, a debt forgiveness, no increases in power rates, pensions for farmers and agricultural laborers, and justice for those who were harmed in Lakhimpur Kheri in 2021 and during the farmers' protests in 2020–21 are among their demands.Around 1 pm today, the farmers are expected to start their foot procession from the Shambhu border.Section 163 of the BNS, which forbids the unlawful gathering of groups of four or more individuals, has been enforced together with the deployment of enhanced security at the Shambhu border in the Ambala district of Haryana.Farmers and security forces may clash in Haryana if permission to cross the border is denied, as has happened in the past when protests were put down on February 13 and February 21 of this year. The farmers have stated that they had notified the relevant authorities about their plan in advance, but the police have asserted that the farmers did not seek prior permission prior to the protest.Important points: With security troops stationed at the Singhu border, Delhi police have prepared for the farmers' protest and are "ready to tackle any situation," a representative told PTI. One of the farmers' protest leaders, Jagjit Singh Dallewal, has been fasting until death for the past ten days near the Khanauri border. In the last ten months, the protesting farmer unions have made three attempts to march to the nation's capital. Police and farmers clashed during the first two attempts, which took place on February 13 and 21. Farmers from Uttar Pradesh who had been demonstrating against government land purchases between 1997 and 2008 in Gautam Buddha Nagar for more than ten days earlier this week called off their protests after receiving promises.

The Sambhal Mosque Survey SC instructs the trial court to pause proceedings and requests that Shahi Jama Masjid management contact the Allahabad High Court

The Sambhal Mosque Survey SC instructs the trial court to pause proceedings and requests that Shahi Jama Masjid management contact the Allahabad High Court

After a trial court permitted the survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in response to allegations that it was constructed by demolishing a Hindu temple, violence erupted in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, killing four persons.Following a civil action alleging the mosque was constructed by demolishing a Hindu temple, the Supreme Court on Friday instructed the management committee of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, to petition the Allahabad High Court to overturn the lower court's decision permitting a survey of the structure. The court of civil judges (senior division), which permitted the survey, was also directed by a bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar to hold off on taking further action until the high court issues the necessary directives. We have been informed that the trial court will hear the case on January 8, 2025. The Supreme Court order stated, "We hope and trust that the trial court will not proceed with the matter until it is listed before the high court and any further proceedings will be in terms of the order passed.""Any revision, appeal, or miscellaneous petition that is preferred before the appropriate forum would be listed within a period of three working days after the same is filed," the bench added. The court recorded Additional Solicitor General (ASG) K M Nataraj's pledge that "in the meantime, peace and harmony must be maintained." "We are taking care of it," stated the ASG, who represented the district administration. The court further ordered that any reports submitted by the advocate commissioner designated by the trial court to carry out the survey must be kept in a sealed cover and not unsealed. According to the Supreme Court, the appeal will remain pending until January 6, 2025. Additionally, the bench made it clear that it has not voiced any opinions regarding the matter's merits. The appeal argued that although the mosque had been used continuously by Muslims as a place of worship since the 16th century, the case was handled in "hot haste" after eight plaintiffs filed a lawsuit alleging that it had been constructed after the "Shri Hari Har Temple" was destroyed.

China is prepared to increase cooperation with Mongolia and Russia.

Reuters, Beijing, October 16 At a meeting with his neighbors on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit on Wednesday, China's Premier Li Qiang suggested further three-way relations with Russia and Mongolia, according to official media. In recent years, the three have become closer. This year, China and Mongolia both threw open their arms to Russian President Vladimir Putin, just as Moscow did for China's Xi Jinping in 2023, and Beijing did the same for Mongolia's president.According to the official news agency Xinhua, Li, China's second-ranking official, stated that "China is ready to work with Russia and Mongolia to further enhance mutual trust, strengthen coordination and promote deeper... trilateral co-operation."He was addressing L. Oyun-Erdene, the prime minister of Mongolia, and Mikhail Mishustin, the prime minister of Russia.Since 2004, Mongolia has opted to remain an observer state and is not a member of the SCO, a China-led Eurasian security bloc. Nevertheless, China is still gently pressuring its smaller neighbor to join the ten-nation bloc. Officials from the United States are also pursuing the resource-rich, landlocked nation, which has pledged to invest in its heavy industry and mining. However, Washington criticized Ulaanbaatar for hosting Putin in September despite the International Criminal Court in The Hague issuing an arrest order for him. If the Russian president enters any of the 124 nations that make up the court's membership, including Mongolia, he is often required by such a warrant to be arrested and taken to the Hague for trial.A large pipeline that Russia intends to construct to transport 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from the Yamal area to China passes through Mongolia. Li told Mishustin in a separate meeting that China was open to deepening its energy and commerce relations with Russia, according to Chinese state media.

According to a state government official, "The government is committed to addressing the issues related to street vendors and will thoughtfully consider all suggestions before making a decision. "Legislators from the Congress and BJP have been appointed to a committee headed by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshvardhan Chauhan to examine the policy on street vendors, according to a government official. After considering the proposals from different parties, the committee will recommend a course of action to the state government. He went on to say that the cabinet would assess these suggestions carefully before making a final decision. The son of six-time chief minister Virbhadra Singh, Vikramaditya, told The Indian Express over the phone from Delhi that he had made his remarks as the urban development minister and not as a member of the committee on the policy for street vendors. The committee hasn't created a policy yet. However, what I stated about the owners' IDs being shown at restaurants and food stands is based on rules that the highest court and some high courts have established," he continued.
