EC requires pre-certification on all platforms and tightens regulations on digital ads ahead of state elections.

With the announcement of the Assembly election schedule for Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry, as well as by-elections in six states, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has implemented a more comprehensive regulatory framework to control political advertising, emphasizing digital platforms, transparency, and the control of misinformation.A pre-certification requirement for all political advertisements in electronic and online media is at the heart of the directive. The action is a reflection of the Commission's effort to stay up with the quickly changing political landscape, where voter perception is now significantly shaped by social media amplification and digital outreach. Before distributing commercials, all political parties, candidates, and affiliated organizations must first receive approval from the Media Certification and Monitoring Committees (MCMCs), according to the new regulations. This holds true for a variety of digital channels, such as social media platforms, e-papers, bulk SMS, voice messaging, and public audio-visual displays, in addition to more conventional electronic media like radio and television. While recognized political parties can apply for certification through state-level committees, candidates and individuals must apply to district-level MCMCs. To examine disputed rulings, an appeals process has also been established, with each state's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) serving as its head. The Commission has effectively extended regulatory authority deep into the digital ecosystem by making it plain that no political advertisement may be published or distributed on internet-based platforms without prior approval. In addition to certification, MCMCs have been assigned to monitor suspected "paid news" situations more closely, which has long been a problem in Indian elections. When content is discovered to be promotional but presented as editorial, the committees are supposed to keep a careful eye on media outputs and take appropriate action. Candidates are now required to disclose all official social media accounts in their nomination papers as part of a concurrent push for transparency. In online campaigning, where unofficial or proxy accounts have frequently been used to reinforce narratives without credit, this rule aims to ensure traceability and responsibility.

IPL 2026 Cultural Toolkit for Brands Folk Frequency Releases

IPL 2026 Cultural Toolkit for Brands Folk Frequency Releases

BARC India and Nielsen have jointly announced the launch of BARC | Nielsen ONE Ads, a first-of-its-kind cross-media advertising measurement solution that combines digital and linear television data into a single, unified framework, marking a significant milestone for the Indian advertising sector. The absence of a unified, single-source view of campaign effectiveness across screens is a persistent problem in the advertising ecosystem that the new approach seeks to solve. In order to maximize media spending, marketers and agencies need more integrated measuring solutions as media consumption continues to split across platforms and devices.BARC | Nielsen ONE Ads integrates Nielsen ONE Ads' digital measuring capabilities with BARC's linear television viewership statistics. Advertisers can assess actual campaign reach and frequency across the whole media landscape thanks to the platform's deduplicated view of audiences across various screens, including Linear TV, Connected TV (CTV), Mobile, and Computer/Desktop. JioHotstar will be the first platform to use the framework, starting with the ICC Men's T20 World Cup India & Sri Lanka 2026. The partnership is a major step toward measuring premium internet and television content across platforms. Further industry-wide cross-screen coverage may be possible in the future with further involvement from other broadcasters.

How CTV can prevent repeating the ad errors of linear TV for living room monetization

How CTV can prevent repeating the ad errors of linear TV for living room monetization

Connected TV live sports are about to enter a crucial period of recalibration. The medium is plagued by an old broadcast reflex: more advertisements equal more money, despite its promises of scale, accuracy, and living-room supremacy. A fundamental concern for the ecosystem is raised by the growing need to profit from every stop as live matches draw enormous concurrent audiences. To what extent can ad loads be increased before fandom becomes transactional and viewer immersion breaks down? Tolerance is a delicate currency in an environment where control and choice are paramount. This unique research explores what sustainability actually means during live sports by bringing together voices from the CTV, ad-tech, platform, and agency sectors. Beyond simple inventory counts, topics like experience design, temporal intelligence, creative ecosystems, and attention economics are covered. The emphasis is on creating a model where monetization does not come at the expense of loyalty, taking into account factors like the unpredictable nature of live broadcasts and the potential to increase interaction after the final whistle. The fundamental conflict is obvious: how well the ecosystem learns to use the screen, rather than how much advertising it can accommodate, will determine the direction of CTV sports in the future.

What is the reason behind Punjab Governor Kataria's abrupt praise of the Bhagwant Mann government in contrast to cooperation

What is the reason behind Punjab Governor Kataria's abrupt praise of the Bhagwant Mann government in contrast to cooperation

The Punjab Assembly's budget session began earlier this week when Governor Gulab Chand Kataria gave a speech that mainly commended the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's performance, despite opposition protests interfering with Assembly business and the governor's own anti-drug march weeks prior continuing to garner political attention. In sharp contrast to his predecessor, Banwarilal Purohit, who had multiple run-ins with the Punjab government, Kataria praises the initiatives of the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government. The government drafts the governor's address, which summarizes their accomplishments.Governors Thaawar Chand Gehlot and R N Ravi, who has since been named governor of West Bengal, have recently omitted portions of their speeches that commended the state governments in states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, where the governors are perceived to have a tumultuous relationship with the state government.Mann's AAP government and Purohit had a number of issues between 2022 and 2024. One such disagreement occurred in early 2023 when the Governor first refused to approve the Budget session, which forced the state government to petition the Supreme Court. However, Kataria's 51-page speech on March 6 detailed the state government's efforts in a number of areas, including welfare programs, infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and anti-drug campaigns. The extension of Aam Aadmi Clinics throughout the state was one of the efforts that were emphasized. According to the governor, hundreds of clinics are currently in operation and have given locals crores of free consultations and medications. The speech also mentioned the government's "Yudh Nashean Virudh" anti-drug program, which includes outpatient opioid-assisted treatment clinics and de-addiction centers for drug addicts' rehabilitation. In order to improve government education, Kataria mentioned hiring thousands of instructors and creating Schools of Eminence. The address also mentioned road infrastructure upgrades, irrigation facilities, 300 units of free power for the majority of homes, and farmer welfare programs including increased sugarcane prices.Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and other Congress lawmakers frequently interrupted the speech by shouting slogans about things like law and order. Assuring the lawmakers that they could voice their objections during the discussion later, Kataria pleaded with them to let him finish the constitutional address first. Congress MLAs eventually organized a walkout as the protests persisted. Following the speech, the Governor spoke at a joint press conference with Mann, praising the Punjab government's efforts to combat drug misuse and enhance education. According to him, the Opposition ought to have let the speech end before voicing its opinions in the House so that their complaints could be legally documented.

Unauthorized reviews, dubious log-ins, and fuzzy documents: TMC MP to Supreme Court on SIR

TMC MP Dola Sen told the Supreme Court that Election Commission-appointed micro-observers were allegedly overriding decisions made by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), the statutory authority for including and deleting electors, raising concerns that eligible voters could be removed from the final electoral roll during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal. In two applications filed on February 16 and 18, Sen, a petitioner before the Supreme Court contesting the SIR, also claimed that documents uploaded to the system were becoming "blurry" after submission and that officials were allegedly logging into the ECINET portal from locations other than where they were deputed. On February 28, West Bengal's final electoral roll is expected to be released. The Indian Express asked the EC for comment on Sen's claims, but the EC did not reply. The EC only deployed micro-observers in West Bengal, which was a first, despite announcing the SIR in nine states and three Union Territories on October 27 of last year. The EC informed the Supreme Court on February 4 that the purpose of the 8,100 micro-observers, who work for the Central Government, was to support EROs and Assistant EROs (AEROs). The EC had stated, "It is false to suggest that statutory powers have been vested in the micro-observers."

India displays its entire armed might on the 77th Republic Day, with Operation Sindoor taking front stage on the Kartavya Path.

Top national leaders and prominent foreign visitors joined the festivities, which had as their subject 150 years of "Vande Mataram." About 10,000 distinguished guests saw the parade, which combined military might with cultural cohesion. At its 77th Republic Day parade on Monday, January 26, 2026, India put military might front and centre. Kartavya Path was transformed into a sweeping display of missiles, armour, mechanised columns, and combat aircraft, with a keen focus on weapon systems related to Operation Sindoor, the high-intensity military operation carried out in May of last year. The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, Akash air defence system, Suryastra rocket launcher, and Arjun Main Battle Tank were among the major armament systems on exhibit at the start of the military demonstration, which emphasised India's focus on battlefield readiness and domestic defence manufacturing. A large portion of the equipment on exhibit was either used in Operation Sindoor, the confrontation with Pakistan that took place from May 7–10, or it was directly inspired by lessons learnt.A tri-services tableau featuring replicas of key weapon systems used during the operation was a big draw. A glass-cased integrated operational command centre served as its focal point, providing a visual representation of Operation Sindoor's execution through the coordinated use of systems including the S-400 air defence system and BrahMos. Akash and S-400 systems were depicted as offering a protective air-defense shield during the fight, while BrahMos missiles were predicted to perform decisive offensive attacks.Lt. General Bhavnish Kumar, a second-generation officer and General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, led the procession. The Indian Army demonstrated a phased "Battle Array Format," including its airborne component, for the first time. The reconnaissance element included high-mobility reconnaissance vehicles after the historic 61 Cavalry in active battle uniform. Flying in Prahar formation, the domestic Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and its armed counterpart Rudra displayed aerial battlefield shaping.

They surrendered in front of Central Reserve Police Force officials and top police officers. According to Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan, they expressed dissatisfaction with the "hollow" Maoist doctrine, crimes carried out by Naxalites on defenseless tribal people, and the increasing power of security forces. The Chhattisgarh government's 'Niyad Nellanar' initiative, which aims to facilitate development projects in rural communities, and the state's new surrender and rehabilitation policy also impressed the cadres, he said.According to the official, Oyam Lakhmu, a member of battalion no. 1 of the Peoples' Liberation Guerrilla Army, which was regarded as the most formidable Maoist military unit, was carrying a bounty of ₹10 lakh on his head. When you chew a piece of ginger every day for sixty days, your body experiences this.

Strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can be found in ginger. However, what would happen if a person chewed a piece of ginger every day for sixty days? When we asked Dr. Amreen Sheikh, chief nutritionist at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, about it, he replied that it increases circulation, relaxes the airways, and progressively lessens throat inflammation. Many patients report decreased bloating, improved digestion, and fewer coughs after six to eight weeks. Ginger can ease the inner lining of the airways and provide general lung comfort for people who are susceptible to seasonal respiratory symptoms, according to Sheikh.Yes, but with reasonable expectations, Sheikh argued. Unlike medication, ginger does not "open the lungs." Rather, it operates subtly. It can aid those who frequently experience irritation from pollutants, relieve moderate wheezing from cold weather, and clear congestion in the throat. Additionally, by loosening mucus, its warming impact facilitates its expulsion during an illness. Ginger can help with long-term lung conditions like COPD or asthma, but it should never take the place of prescription medication, Sheikh said. While using ginger on a daily basis is generally safe, Sheikh pointed out that excessive use can cause oral irritation, cause acidity in those who are sensitive, or slightly thin the blood. Before developing a habit, people who take blood thinners or have gastritis or acid reflux should speak with a doctor. A tiny portion is more than sufficient; moderation is crucial," Sheikh stated.

Cough syrup deaths: TNFDA probe reveals Coldrif manufacturer's shortcomings

According to CDSCO sources, the investigation into the Kanchipuram-based Coldrif cough syrup producer, which was connected to child fatalities in Madhya Pradesh, has shown shortcomings in the Tamil Nadu Food and Drug Administration's enforcement of fundamental regulatory standards. They said that Sresan Pharma, which was granted a license by the Tamil Nadu Food and Drug Administration (TNFDA) in 2011, carried on operating undetected for more than ten years in spite of its inadequate infrastructure and many infractions of national drug safety regulations.According to the sources, a recent examination by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) revealed the unit's terrible conditions and complete disregard for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). "The CDSCO has not participated in any of Sresan Pharma's audits. This company was not included in any of the CDSCO databases since the CDSCO was not involved and the state FDA did not provide the CDSCO with any information on it, according to a source.Rule 84AB of the D and C Rules mandates that manufacturers update all of their certified items on the "Sugam" site, according to another source at the CDSCO.In order to facilitate improved monitoring, the regulation was notified to create a national database of all the authorized items in the nation. "The business failed to list its goods in the database. It did not follow this guideline as a result. According to the source, the state regulator is in charge of ensuring that the regulation is followed in the state.

Why it's never a good idea to do a DIY chemical peel

Why it's never a good idea to do a DIY chemical peel

People all over the world are enamored with the idea of having flawlessly clear skin, whether they have glazed or glass skin. They are using expert treatments, such as wine baths and salmon sperm facials, in addition to skincare and makeup to reach their goals. In recent years, chemical peels have been increasingly popular among these. However, as members of the social media generation, it appears like there is a do-it-yourself solution for practically anything. By combining various acids, many people have even begun trying chemical peels at home.Even while your nani-dadi ke nuskhe were safe enough to try at home, trying a chemical peel is a very different matter and might cause significant skin damage. But first, comprehend...According to Dr. Ruben Bhasin Passi, dermatology consultant at CK Birla Hospital in Gurugram, "Chemical peels are skin treatments that use acid-based solutions to exfoliate the outer layers of the skin," India Today reports. According to her, these treatments function by encouraging cell turnover, breaking down dead skin cells, and boosting the creation of collagen.Peels can treat problems like acne, hyperpigmentation, fine wrinkles, and uneven texture, depending on their strength (light, medium, or deep). "While deeper peels like trichloroacetic acid penetrate deeper for more dramatic results, light peels like alpha-hydroxy acids target the epidermis," Dr. Passi continues.Additionally, according to Dr. Shifa Yadav, dermatology and cosmetology consultant at Artemis Hospitals in Gurugram, this procedure aids in the skin's regeneration of new, healthier cells, giving it a smoother, more even complexion. It is frequently used in skin care clinics to improve the appearance and feel of skin, but in order to prevent irritation or injury, it must be applied and maintained properly.Even though experimenting with at-home hacks can be enjoyable, practical, and even economical, it's crucial to keep in mind that not all conditions can be safely treated using do-it-yourself methods. To prevent long-term damage, certain beauty procedures—particularly those involving potent chemicals—require professional knowledge and expertise.According to Dr. Vidushi Jain, medical head of Dermalinks in Delhi-NCR, homemade peels frequently employ the incorrect acid concentrations without taking the safety of the skin into account. They lack the professional followup that such procedures require, which can lead to burns, infections, uneven pigmentation, and delayed healing. "Many kits have strong acids like TCA or glycolic acid that can harm the skin," says Dr. Yadav.

Bihar Catch-22 Congress and RJD are hesitant to take action against MLAs who did not participate in Rajya Sabha elections

Bihar Catch-22 Congress and RJD are hesitant to take action against MLAs who did not participate in Rajya Sabha elections

Both parties are currently in a difficult situation after the Opposition Mahagathbandhan lost to the NDA in the pivotal Rajya Sabha elections earlier this week due to the absence of four of its MLAs, three from the Congress and one from the RJD. They are unsure of how to deal with them. Surendra Mehta (Valmiki Nagar), Manoj Vishwas (Forbesganj), and Manohar Prasad Singh (Manihari) have all received show-cause notices from the Congress, and the RJD has not yet made a decision regarding their Dhaka lawmaker Faisal Rahman.Asit Nath Tiwari, a spokesperson for the Bihar Congress, told The Indian Express that the notifications were sent out despite the fact that Rajya Sabha elections are exempt from the anti-defection law. "Top party leaders will meet and decide on the appropriate course of action after we receive their responses," he stated.Another Congress leader, however, pointed out that the MLAs make up almost half of the party's strength in the Assembly and suggested that disciplinary action was improbable. What happens if the Speaker acknowledges them as a distinct group? Regardless, the rebels weren't actually members of Congress. Singh is known to be close to JD(U) leaders, whereas Mehta received a ticket because of the influence of (Independent Purnea MP) Pappu Yadav," the politician stated.Rahman, the son of former MP Motiur Rahman, presents a similar problem for the RJD. "Faisal narrowly secured his seat in the Assembly elections last year. Additionally, we have verified that his mother was quite ill on March 16, the day of the election. The party is likely to call the MLA once our leader Tejashwi Yadav comes to Patna. An RJD senior stated that the party will not be provoked by NDA leaders "who want to further weaken it," although no official show-cause notice has yet been issued.

Ashok Chavan to join BJP today, calls it ‘a new beginning’

Former Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan on Tuesday morning announced that he would be formally joining the BJP today.Ashok Chavan resigned from the primary membership of the Congress party on Monday. Sources close to the party further revealed some MLAs and office bearers of the Congress party are also likely to follow him. After submitting his resignation to Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Nana Patole, he told reporters on Monday, "I have resigned from the Assembly membership as an MLA. I have given my resignation to the Speaker. I have resigned from the Congress Working Committee and the Congress primary membership." Ashok Chavan served in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for three terms from 1999 to May 2014. He was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from December 8, 2008, to November 9, 2010, when he was forced to resign due to corruption allegations linked to the Adarsh Housing Society scam. Meanwhile, several Congress leaders condemned the move, calling it a 'dirty political' game. Party leader Prithviraj Chavhan said, "Our senior colleague Ashok Chavan has resigned from the party and also as the MLA. It's a sad decision. This had been talked about for a long time. We didn't think he would make this decision. He was made the state CM on two occasions. What went wrong, who was he upset about--only he will tell about this. This is very tragic. All members of the Congress Legislative Party are together. BJP leaders are spreading rumours that some people are in touch with them," Chavan said while addressing the media. "It is really surprising. This hasn't happened in Maharashtra before. It is totally a dirty political game by the Bharatiya

‘We Need Extensive, Systematic Datasets To Counter Narratives Around Caste’

‘We Need Extensive, Systematic Datasets To Counter Narratives Around Caste’

In November 2023, Bihar released the findings of its caste survey, revealing tentative but crucial data on various caste groups in the state, and exposing privileges and disadvantages faced by caste groups. There has been a demand by opposition parties to conduct a nationwide caste census to collate caste data. Such an exercise was last conducted in 1931. Some states such as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have decided to conduct state-level surveys. We have a stereotype about caste based on the varna hierarchy [traditional birth-based Hindu social order] that it is ancient and stable, and nothing changes. The reality of caste is different at the regional level,” said sociologist Surinder S. Jodhka. Caste is an important indicator of social exclusion, he added. While the population census, which is now more than a decade old and delayed by nearly three years, collects data on Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), caste-based enumeration must be done by state governments because “caste formations are regional in character”, he added. Jodhka is a professor of sociology at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences in Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. In an interview, he speaks about the need for state-based caste censuses, why governments must engage more with scholars to unpack caste data, and the need for subclassifications of SCs, STs and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Gandhi’s ‘Doctrine of Frightfulness’ Charge Against the British is Just as Relevant for India Today

Gandhi’s ‘Doctrine of Frightfulness’ Charge Against the British is Just as Relevant for India Today

After  the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919, Mahatma Gandhi wrote that the British regime perpetuated itself by employing the doctrine of frightfulness.  It struck fear in the hearts of people who were expected to meekly surrender before the colonial authorities by accepting falsehoods spun by them and forsaking not just protest but even a questioning attitude either in public or through the media. That doctrine of frightfulness is being replayed in the India of 2024. Those sections of the media which question the Modi regime are under attack and opposition parties are being split. People’s representatives, some of whom occupy high constitutional positions, are not spared. Many of them face jail, the threat of incarceration or repeated coercive action at the hands of government agencies. On February 12, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and a veteran leader of  Congress resigned from the party. He was facing several corruption cases. A day later, he joined the BJP. The political buzz is that he was told he had two options – join the BJP or go to jail. This exemplifies how the doctrine of fear is used to actuate a former chief minister of a major state like Maharashtra to resign from his party and embrace the BJP. Several newspapers and independent media platforms such as Newsclick, Caravan, The Wire and Newslaundry have faced punitive action. In Kashmir, the press club was shut down and several journalists were jailed on trumped up charges. In the case of Newsclick, its founding editor Prabir Purkayastha faces terrorism charges under the draconian UAPA law for  discharging journalistic responsibilities. Prime Minister Modi often takes pride in saying that India is the mother of democracy and yet his regime is acting contrary to basic democratic values. The relentless penal measures directed against the media flow from the doctrine of frightfulness which is applied with impunity to make independent and critical media subservient to the government, just as corporate media already is. These developments remind us of the dark days of martial law imposed in Punjab following the Jallianwala Bagh  massacre and the suppression of the press. Mahatma Gandhi in his report on the Punjab Disorders observed that  “The existence of independent journalism became an impossibility during the Martial Law regime and The Tribune, the Punjabee, and the Pratap stopped publishing”. Those words of Gandhi resonate in India now when there is a great threat posed to independent journalism and those media platforms who dare to question the powers that be.

Demolitions as Extra-Judicial Punishment Have Left India in a Perpetual State of Violence

Demolitions as Extra-Judicial Punishment Have Left India in a Perpetual State of Violence

Under international human rights law, states must ensure that evictions only occur in exceptional circumstances, require full justification and the provision of adequate legal safeguards. None of that here in New India, of course. The demolitions in Uttarakhand last week, after which five people were killed in violence, follows a pattern that we see in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states. The pattern is of course that the government goes after citizens, especially Muslims. The demolitions are carried out as a form of extra-judicial punishment by the municipal authorities and the police, whether after episodes of communal violence or protests against discrimination. The pattern has been documented in reports like “Routes of Wrath: Weaponising religious processions” by the Citizens and Lawyers Initiative. In his foreword, former Supreme Court Justice Rohinton F. Nariman says the report corroborates the findings (of decline in Indian democratic values), adding: “It finds that in nine states, during Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti celebrations in April 2022, there were widespread acts of hooliganism and violence.” After this, the JCBs came out. A report by Amnesty International, of which I am India chair, has found similar patterns of people made homeless and deprived of livelihoods. These individuals were subjected to forced evictions, intimidation and unlawful force by the police and collective and arbitrary punishment, which undermined their rights to non-discrimination, adequate housing, and a fair trial. Muslim-concentrated localities were either chosen or Muslim-owned properties selectively targeted in diverse areas for demolitions.

BJP imports leaders, exports confidence? What Ashok Chavan’s move says about the saffron party’s insecurities

BJP imports leaders, exports confidence? What Ashok Chavan’s move says about the saffron party’s insecurities

The BJP needs Maharashtra to retain its strength in Parliament. With 48 seats — second only to Uttar Pradesh, which has 80 seats — the western state has been making the BJP nervous since the 2019 assembly elections when it failed to get a majority on its own On March 30, 2014, when he was in Nanded to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi received huge applause for his announcement that should he become prime minister, he would send Ashok Chavan to jail “within six months”. In 2023, with the incumbent PM expecting to begin his third innings, Chavan found himself mentioned again for his role in the Adarsh scam in the Modi government’s much tom-tommed White Paper, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman last week. However, as the 10th anniversary of the promise made in Nanded approaches, and barely four days after coming up in Parliament for his alleged role in the Adarsh scam, Ashok Chavan has joined the BJP. This is perfectly in line with the BJP’s current policy: Accuse and appropriate. Last year, when addressing party workers in Bhopal, Modi charged the NCP leadership of swindling Rs 70,000 crore in various misdeeds, including the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank scam, irrigation scam and illegal mining scam. Soon, Ajit Pawar, an alleged kingpin in these scams, joined hands with the BJP, sharing the deputy chief ministership with its home-grown stalwart, Devendra Fadnavis. The BJP’s “Free Incoming” policy, read with PM Narendra Modi’s frequent trips to the state, underlines the importance given to Maharashtra in pursuit of its “Mission 400” in the upcoming parliamentary polls. In contrast to its rhetoric, the BJP’s unabashed import of tainted leaders hints at how unsure it is about Maharashtra.Having peaked in the Hindi heartland, two states are crucial for the BJP’s parliamentary arithmetic — Bihar and Maharashtra. Thanks to habitual turncoat Nitish Kumar, the BJP is assured of its position in Bihar. However, Maharashtra continues to be its Achilles’ heel. This reality was reflected in the recent survey conducted by a private agency for a media house, which gave the ruling combine not more than 22 seats. This is despite the BJP making every effort to split the Shiv Sena and the NCP to form a three-party government in the state. If this poll is to be believed, the residual Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray and the NCP that is led by the old Maratha war horse, Sharad Pawar, could walk away with as many as 26 seats. The fact that in the 2019 general elections, the BJP-Shiv Sena combine had pocketed 41 out of 48 seats speaks of how tough the task in Maharashtra is for the BJP. The BJP needs Maharashtra to retain its strength in Parliament. With 48 seats — second only to Uttar Pradesh, which has 80 seats — the western state has been making the BJP nervous since the 2019 assembly elections when it failed to get a majority on its own. The subsequent experiment by the Congress, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP and the Shiv Sena to join hands and keep the BJP at bay forced the saffron party to adopt a two-pronged strategy: Split the Shiv Sena and the NCP and later weaken the Congress by incorporating many of its leaders. Having achieved the first two, the BJP is now on the third. A point worth noting is that all these imported settlers have a common imprint. Almost all of them are Marathas — be it Narayan Rane, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Harshvardhan Patil, etc — who were brought in a few years ago, or the fresh ones like Ajit Pawar and Ashok Chavan. The BJP’s quest for Maratha votes has a solid reason: It lacks its own Maratha leader who has popular appeal, particularly in western Maharashtra and Marathwada. The BJP has high hopes for Ajit Pawar for the former region, while it expects Ashok Chavan to deliver in the latter, where the BJP has been unable to find an able successor to the late Gopinath Munde. The legacy of Munde — who hailed from Beed, adjacent to Ashok Chavan’s constituency, Nanded — has three claimants: Two of his daughters, Pritam, a doctor and MP, and Pankaja, an MLA, and his nephew Dhananjay, who has joined hands with Ajit Pawar after a stint in the BJP. Even the three together do not wield the kind of influence that Munde did. Since his demise in 2014, the BJP has been in search of a formidable face in the region.

Ex-Navy vets freed by Qatar chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai, praise PM Modi

Ex-Navy vets freed by Qatar chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai, praise PM Modi

Setting foot to their homeland after several agonising months of captivity in Qatar, seven of the eight Indian navy veterans who were sentenced to death on ‘espionage’ charges, heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying they wouldn’t have been freed had it for the sustained diplomatic efforts at his behest to secure their release. Relieved to finally walk free, the seven former Navy officers raised chants of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ after arriving at the Delhi airport in the early hours of Feb 12. One of the Navy veterans who returned from Qatar said, “We waited almost for 18 months to be back in India. We are extremely grateful to the PM. It wouldn’t have been possible without his intervention and his equation with Qatar. We are grateful to the Government of India from the bottom of our hearts for every effort that has been made and this day won’t have been possible without those efforts.”The eight Indian nationals were imprisoned in Qatar since October 2022 and were accused of allegedly spying on a submarine programme. The retired naval personnel were sentenced to death by a Qatar court on charges that have not yet been made public officially.

A mid-range smartphone with ‘super’ display

A mid-range smartphone with ‘super’ display

After being away from the Indian market for three years, Honor came back in 2023 with a mid-range phone. Now, the company is launching its mid-tier Honor X9b.The Honor X9b comes at a time when the smartphone market is quite mature and fairly saturated. If you want to spend around Rs 25,000 on an Android phone, it is very unlikely that you will be stuck with a truly bad one unless you are intentionally deciding to make poor choices. With the X9b, Honor has seemingly decided to pin its hopes on what it is calling the “ultra-bounce anti-drop display,” which the company claims can withstand “1.2 times the impact of a drop, whatever that means. The truth of the matter is that I am not quite equipped to do the kind of specialised testing to see if those claims are true. Honor says that the X9b is the “first phone to get a five-star overall drop resistance certification from Switzerland’s SGS.”Certifications like this are meaningless unless they provide a benchmark to compare against. What I can say for the phone is that my clumsy self dropped it twice — once from my bed a foot or two above the ground and one from my table that is less than a metre above the ground. There was no damage. Also, my friend’s pet cockatiel Kiwi took a liking to perching on the phone when I held it up around him. Kiwi’s sharp claws scratch my shoulder when he sits on it, but it did nothing to the phone. Of course, I am not sure how much of that can be attributed to the applied screen protector and the free transparent case that comes with the phone. The massive 6.7-inch screen has a 2652×1200 (1.5k resolution), giving it a very high pixel density of 429 pixels per inch. The sides of the phone’s screen curve away from the user in a way that reminds me of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. Maybe that is not what you remember that phone for. I am usually sceptical about phones that have a curved display because I am not sure how well they deal with palm rejection but that did not seem to be an issue here. That may be because the actual screen does not really curve as much as the glass’s design makes it appear.

Google Gemini App on Android, Gemini Toggle on iOS Rolling Out in India and Other Countries

Google Gemini App on Android, Gemini Toggle on iOS Rolling Out in India and Other Countries

Google has started rolling out its Gemini app on Android to users in India. While there's no dedicated app on iOS, iPhone owners will be able to see a toggle on the top of the Google app, allowing them to enable and utlise the features of the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot. The tech giant launched the Android app on February 8, but the rollout was limited to the US. Now, the app is being expanded to more than 150 countries and territories. According to Google's support page, the Gemini mobile app is now available in English, Korean, and Japanese languages and is being expanded to more than 150 countries and territories. The full list of countries is listed on Google's support page. The iPhone users don't have a dedicated app at the moment, but they can use Gemini's AI capabilities through the Google app, which now has a toggle button on the top-right that allows access to the chatbot. Gadgets 360 was able to confirm the availability of the Gemini toggle on the Google app on iOS 17.2.1. The Gemini app requires a smartphone with at least 4GB of RAM. It must also run Android 12 or newer versions of Google's operating system. Similarly, the Gemini toggle is available to iPhone users running iOS 16 and newer. As the AI service is only available in English, Japanese, and Korean, it will only be available on smartphones set to use these languages. Lastly, users should be signed in to a personal Google Account or a Workspace account where the administrator has enabled the feature. In case, you still cannot see the app or the toggle, it is worth noting that the global rollout started on Thursday and is expected to continue for a few more days. Jack Krawczyk, Senior Director of Product at Google, who is also handling Gemini, revealed in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) that the Gemini app's restrictions on image uploading and image generation were being somewhat relaxed. However, he added, “We'll continue to work through responsibly aligning on refusals with both images and text.” More features and expansion to more regions are currently in progress, as per the Gemini head. Some users who added Gemini as the default assistant over Google Assistant in Android smartphones had complained that there was no clarity on which in-device features was the AI capable of performing. Krawczyk said in a post on Wednesday, “Working on making it more clear exactly which Assistant features are work in progress vs which are available now. (also working on narrowing that gap!)”

Tata Motors Announces First EV Price Cuts in India; Electric Car Prices Lowered By Up to 8 Percent

Tata Motors Announces First EV Price Cuts in India; Electric Car Prices Lowered By Up to 8 Percent

Electric cars make up only 2 percent of all car sales in India, due to concerns over higher upfront costs and range anxiety. Indian automaker Tata Motors' electric vehicle (EV) unit on Tuesday said it has reduced prices of its cars by up to 120,000 rupees (~$1,450) in what is the first instance of a price cut by an electric carmaker in the country. Electric variants currently form just 2% of car sales in India, as buyers are wary about the higher upfront costs despite lower running costs and as range anxiety persists. "With battery cell prices having softened in the recent past and considering their potential reduction in the foreseeable future, we have chosen to proactively pass on the resulting benefits directly to customers," said Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer at the TPG-backed Tata Passenger Electric MobilityThe price of the top-selling Nexon.ev is now down 1.4% to 1.45 million rupees. Prices previously began at 1.47 million rupees, according to Tata's website. The company, which dominates EV car sales in India, also cut the price of its electric small car Tiago by 70,000 rupees. The base version now costs around 8.1% lower at 799,000 rrupees Launched in 2020, the Nexon.ev was India's cheapest electric SUV until the launch of Tata's Punch EV at 1.2 million rupees in 2024. EV sales have slowed globally as well, with U.S. carmaker Tesla leading a price-cut war to maintain its sales lead over rivals such as China's BYD. "Tata's price cut in India could prompt its rivals to also price their cars more competitively and launch newer EVs at aggressive prices," said Jay Kale, Vice President, Elara Capital. However, this is in stark contrast to India's EV two-wheeler market, in which IPO-bound Ola Electric and Hero-backed Ather are locked in a price war.
