Star Health Insurance Q3 results: Net profit rises 37.5% to Rs 289.55 cr

The largest standalone health insurer, Star Health Insurance, posted a 37.5 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth in net profit to Rs 289.55 crore during the third quarter of the financial year 2023-24, as compared to Rs 210.47 crore in the year-ago period, supported by healthy growth in premium and a fall in commissions expenditure. The net profit jumped by 131 per cent from Rs 125.30 crore in Q2 FY24.The new business premium of the company increased by 16 per cent (Y-o-Y) to Rs 3,605.81 crore from Rs 3,096.68 crore. The net investment income of the firm jumped 40.58 per cent to Rs 162.64 crore from the year ago.The net commission of the health insurer dropped 13.11 per cent (Y-o-Y) to Rs 349.85 crore from Rs 402.64 crore. The solvency ratio of the insurer rose to 223 per cent from 217 per cent. The minimum regulatory requirement is 150 per cent. The combined ratio, which is a measure of the profitability of the general insurer, increased to 97.30 per cent from 94.81 per cent in the year-ago period. A combined ratio of less than 100 is considered to be better; it indicates that the insurer is earning more through premiums as compared to claims paid and the operating expense incurred. Therefore, it is better for the company if the combined ratio is lower. The claims ratio of the company was 67.69 per cent, up from 63.75 per cent in Q2 FY24. The health insurance industry typically witnesses higher claims during the monsoon period due to rainy season-related diseases, whereas historically, insurance premium income is higher towards the end of the financial year considering the tax benefits available to policyholders.

AU SFB stock falls nearly 12 per cent on weak Q3 results

AU SFB stock falls nearly 12 per cent on weak Q3 results

Shares of AU Small Finance Bank (SFB) tanked nearly 12% in intra-day trading on Monday, closing 11.5% down at Rs 626.80 apiece on the BSE after analysts downgraded the bank’s stock and target price due to weak Q3 results. While analysts at YES Securities downgraded the stock to “neutral” from “add” and cut price target to Rs 780 apiece from Rs 840 earlier, Emkay Global Financial Services has cut the target price from Rs 650 apiece to Rs 625 and maintained its “reduce” rating. Nuvama Institutional Equities and Kotak Institutional, meanwhile, have retained their “reduce” and “sell” rating, respectively. AU SFB’s fresh slippages were elevated in Q3 at Rs 403 crore, higher than Rs 349 crore in Q2 and Rs 231 crore a year ago. This resulted in its gross and net non-performing asset (GNPA, NNPA) ratio rising to 1.98% and 0.68% as on December 31 from 1.91% and 0.60% in Q2, respectively. Analysts at Emkay Global said the stress in the SFB’s credit card business is on the rise. Separately, the bank has counter-intuitively cut down its specific provision coverage ratio (PCR) to 66% amid rising stress, which it believes will need to be shored up and, thereby lead to higher loan loss provisioning going ahead. AU SFB’s overall advances stood at Rs 67,624 crore as of December 31, of which the wheels segment accounted for Rs 20,375 crore and credit card exposure was at Rs 2,740 crore. The proposed merger of Fincare SFB with AU SFB, the brokerage said, will be return on asset (RoA) positive but managing human and tech integration and Fincare’s micro finance portfolio will be an “arduous” task.

At A Rally On Day 2 Of The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra In Bihar, Rahul Gandhi Will Speak

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Congressman Rahul Gandhi will speak at his first rally in Bihar on Tuesday. He is hoping to strengthen the opposition INDIA bloc, which has been shaken by the resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. On the second day of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which entered the state through Kishanganj district and stopped for the night at nearby Araria, Mr. Gandhi is holding a rally in Purnea district.   According to Congress legislature party leader in Bihar, the rally will also be addressed by AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge who has also invited other leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc to share the stage.Young leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who is well-known for his oratory skills and is from the Begusarai district of the state, is also probably going to be there.   The RJD, the oldest and most significant ally of the Congress in the state, is expected to be represented by a representative of its de facto leaders, founding president Lalu Prasad and his son Tejashwi Yadav, who has twice lost the position of Deputy Chief Minister due to Nitish Kumar's capers.Akhilesh Prasad Singh, the president of the state Congress, stated that "both Lalu and Tejashwi would have attended the rally, but for the ED summonses which seem to be aimed primarily at thwarting their visit to Purnea". Notably, the Enforcement Directorate questioned Lalu Prasad, who is in his seventies and has numerous medical conditions, for nearly nine hours on Monday at the Patna office. Tejashwi Yadav has been asked to come in for questioning on Tuesday. Like his father, he is named in the purported land-for-jobs scam.

The Governments Economic Report Highlights Three Trends for the Upcoming Years

The Governments Economic Report Highlights Three Trends for the Upcoming Years

The government stated in a report titled "The Indian Economy - A Review" released ahead of the interim Budget that the country's economy is expected to grow at a rate of more than 7% over the next few years, making it the third largest in the world. The Economic Survey, which will only be provided with the complete Budget following the national elections, is replaced by an overview of the economy in this report.   Three trends that "will be with us in the coming years" are highlighted in the report.*According to the report, the period of hyper-globalization in global manufacturing is over. "It does not mean that de-globalisation will be upon us any time soon, as countries are only now discovering the enormous integration of global supply chains that have taken place in the last few decades," it continues. Therefore, the report predicts that if an alternative to the globalization of supply chains ever emerges, it will take a lot longer. That won't stop governments from pursuing friend- and on-shoring of production, though, as it will still have an effect on the costs of logistics and transportation and ultimately affect the final prices of goods. The recent Red Sea events might have exacerbated worries about relying too much on global supply chains, which would explain why global trade is expected to grow more slowly in 2023. To put it another way, it won't be simple to export your way to success. In areas where India has an advantage, this emphasizes the need to reduce logistics costs and make investments in high-quality products in order to maintain and grow market share. *According to the report, artificial intelligence is yet another significant trend to be aware of. "Closely related to this challenge is the advent of Artificial Intelligence with the profound and troubling questions it poses for growth in services trade and employment since technology might remove the advantage of cost competitiveness that countries exporting digital services enjoy," it continues. According to the review, the energy transition challenge is the third trend and possibly the most significant.   A single-minded focus on cutting carbon emissions has resulted from worries about rising temperatures, despite the conclusion that the emission of greenhouse gases—especially carbon—is the most important factor. Due to this, developed countries and international organizations have been pressuring developing countries to transition from fossil fuels to more environmentally friendly energy sources, even in the face of ongoing resource and technological constraints.According to the report, there is a short-term trade-off between energy transition and economic growth. In the post-Covid global economy, where growth is a challenge, countries cannot afford to sacrifice the former for the latter.India, according to the overview, is walking the fine line between the two more skilfully than other nations, with installed non-fossil fuel-based power generation capacity running ahead of targets. Importantly, India's unwavering commitment to ensuring steady economic growth is generating resources for investment needed for climate change adaptation, building resilience, and mitigating emissions.     According to the report, the policies that have been adopted and put into place over the past ten years have put the Indian economy in a better position than before to tackle these three major challenges.

Analysts Say PM Modi Will Likely Focus On Infrastructure and Avoid Large Budget Expenditures

Analysts Say PM Modi Will Likely Focus On Infrastructure and Avoid Large Budget Expenditures

"In order to keep the economy booming and close the budget deficit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to defy the conventional wisdom and prioritize infrastructure spending in the budget presented prior to the general election. The budget for 2024–2025, which will be unveiled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1st, is expected to be conservative in spending but heavy on political messaging to support the Modi government’s narrative of inclusive growth.According to Citigroup economist Samiran Chakraborty, ""the government will likely aim to strike a balance between pre-election political messaging, fiscal consolidation needs, and continued focus on capex.""To attract women voters, for example, the government may double the yearly payout to female farmers to 12,000 rupees. However, the policy will only cost $1.44 billion annually, a pitiful amount in comparison to the government's overall spending, as reported by Reuters. For the upcoming fiscal year, which begins on April 1, the government is expected to maintain its major subsidies at the current level of about $48 billion. Since it has been operating a subsidized foodgrain program for years, PM Modi's free foodgrain program will also not require any additional funding for the next five years. Its current goal of 5.9% of GDP for the current fiscal year will be lowered by at least 50 basis points in 2024–2025. The fiscal deficit is defined as the difference between the amount spent and the amount collected. In the hopes that its growth-boosting policies will eventually result in the creation of jobs, the government is expected to ignore the opposition's criticism of the high rate of youth unemployment and keep up its heavy infrastructure spending while attempting to entice both domestic and foreign manufacturers to invest through incentives.   The likely lowering of the fiscal deficit in an election year shows the government may not be relying very heavily on social spending to woo voters but bank on PM Modi's popularity that helped the ruling party win recent state elections and emotive events like the opening of a Hindu temple on a long disputed site.As it is a general election year, there will be at least some temptation from within the ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) to announce big fiscal giveaways," said Shilan Shah, deputy chief emerging markets economist at Capital Economics.   "But following the BJP's exceptionally strong performance in recent state elections, we think it will conclude that it has enough political goodwill to balance the need for giveaways with its long-term ambition of reining in the fiscal deficit," stated Shah.     "

Rahul Gandhis Post Following Uproar Over UGCs Draft Rules for the Education Panel

Rahul Gandhis Post Following Uproar Over UGCs Draft Rules for the Education Panel

Congressman Rahul Gandhi declared that the party "will never let this happen" and accused the RSS-BJP of plotting to eliminate caste-based reservations in higher education. After the education panel's draft guidelines caused controversy, the Center and the University Grants Commission (UGC), which is in charge of overseeing educational institutions, made it clear that there isn't a plan of that kind. UGC के नए ड्राफ्ट में उच्च मिक्षा संस्थानों में SC, ST और OBC वर्ग को मिले आरक्षण को खित्म्म्ट्ट कॿंॾट्ट में कें्ं The Congress leader claimed that 3,000 of the 7,000 reserved positions in 45 central universities are unfilled in a post on X. "The RSS-BJP have already spoken about reviewing reservation, They now want to snatch the jobs of these (backward) sections in higher education institutions," he claimed. The move, the Congress MP, alleged is an attempt to murder the dreams of those struggling for social justice. "This is BJP's character and the difference between symbolic justice and real justice. The Congress will never let this happen. We will continue to fight for social justice and will ensure that eligible candidates fill up these vacant positions," Mr Gandhi added. The draft guidelines state that a "reserved vacancy may be filled as an unreserved vacancy after it has been declared unreserved by following the procedure of de-reservation."De-reservation of reserved positions in the event of direct recruitment is generally prohibited. The draft guidelines detailed the procedure for filling such a post and stated that, in rare and exceptional cases, the university in question may prepare a proposal for de-reservation of the vacancy, providing the following details: "The proposal will be required to list - efforts made to fill up the post; reasons why it cannot be allowed to remain vacant and justification for de-reservation."   A major controversy was raised by the draft guidelines, which the main Opposition Congress strongly criticized. Congressman Jairam Ramesh had earlier claimed that there was a plot by the BJP to abolish reservations.Amid the outcry, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan assured that "not a single reserved post will be de-reserved". "There is no scope for ambiguity after the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers' Cadre) Act, 2019," he told news agency PTI.

"LAC Situation Stable But Sensitive, No Friction In A Year" : the Army Chief of Staff

There haven't been any more areas of friction between China and India in the past year, Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande stated on Monday, despite maintaining that the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is stable "but sensitive." The Chief of Army Staff stated in an interview with ANI that since April 2020, there have been 20 meetings of senior higher military commanders and 14 meetings of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on China-India Border Affairs. The Line of Actual Control (LAC) situation is sensitive but stable. We haven't had any more conflict areas in this over the past year or so. Regarding our efforts to find a solution, we are still in communication and dialogue with the enemy on a military and diplomatic level, General Pande stated."Since April 2020, we have held 14 WMCC meetings and 20 senior higher military commander level meetings," he stated. We therefore hope that through these discussions, a solution can be reached."   The 3,488 km border between India and China passes through Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Jammu and Kashmir. Since May 2020, when the Chinese troops tried to aggressively change the status quo on LAC in eastern Ladakh, both sides have been deployed in forward positions near Patrolling Point 15, which emerged as a friction point in the wake of the Galwan clash.General Pande gave a briefing on the Army's readiness levels along the northern border, stating, "We are maintaining adequate reserves to be able to deal with any contingencies and our deployment remains robust as well as balanced."     "As all of this is going on, we are also concentrating on strengthening our capacity in these domains by introducing better systems, modernizing our fleet, and introducing safer vehicles, drones for surveillance, improved radio sets for communication, etc. We are concentrating on and exerting effort on infrastructure development at the same time. Be it the habitat, forward connectivities to the LAC, or strategic road connectivity...it also includes extending power supply to our forward troops, improving communication in terms of 5G communication to our troops deployed in forward areas," the Army chief said. "We are also working alongside other government agencies, local administration and the local population to make sure that our preparedness levels along the LAC always remain high," he stated.

Gives Tough Challenge To Chameleons

Gives Tough Challenge To Chameleons": Nitish Kumar is the target of the INDIA Bloc.

Although Nitish Kumar's exit from the Opposition ranks is a serious setback, it has also provided them with a great opportunity to criticize both Nitish Kumar and the BJP. Although this has restored Mr. Kumar's former reputation as "Paltu Ram," he has also accrued a few derogatory terms, such as "tired" and "chameleon." This was Mr. Kumar's second time abandoning the Opposition to pursue more fertile ground under the NDA's auspices. The last time he did so was in 2017, in response to accusations of corruption against Lalu Yadav and his son, Tejashwi Yadav, who was then the deputy chief minister, he declined to stay in the Grand Alliance.   Nevertheless, Mr. Kumar left the BJP and joined the Mahagathbandhan in 2022.Today, Mr. Kumar was attacked by leaders of the Trinamool Congress, AAP, DMK, RJD, JMM, CPI(ML)-L, and Congress.   After Nitish Kumar's return, Tejashwi Yadav regained his position as Deputy Chief Minister and was not happy about it. "The Chief Minister appeared exhausted. I can guarantee you that the JDU party will conclude by 2024. The people support us," he declared. Mr. Kumar was dubbed a "chameleon" by the Congress. The party's media in-charge, Jairam Ramesh, wrote on X, the former Twitter platform, saying: "Nitish Kumar, who frequently changes political partners, is giving chameleons in changing colors a tough competition." He continued, saying that the people of Bihar would not forgive this "expert of betrayal" and those forcing him to dance to their songs.Sharad Pawar took a jab at Nitish Kumar, saying that he "has created a new record of forming the government with all the parties in a single term."   "In the past, the proverb 'Aayaram Gayaram' had gained immense fame in Haryana. However, Nitish also left it in Bihar," he continued.   Uddhav Thackeray, his alliance partner, was scathing.   "We are living under the rule of the 'Paltu Rams,' not Ram Rajya. Manoj Jarange would not have been required to travel to Mumbai in order to support the Maratha quota demand if Ram Rajya had existed, Mr. Thackeray stated.

PM Modi hails Nari Shakti at NCC rally, says govt removed obstacles for women

The world is watching how India’s women are projecting Nari Shakti and proving their mettle in every field, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday, a day after women stole the limelight at the 75th Republic Day parade, with ample representation in every element of India’s biggest ceremonial event: in the flypast, in mechanised columns, in marching contingents, in bands and in the cultural show. “The 75th Republic Day parade on Kartavya Path was dedicated to ‘Nari Shakti’. We have opened up opportunities for daughters in sectors where their entry was previously restricted or limited,” the PM said addressing the customary National Cadet Corps (NCC) rally at the Cariappa parade ground in Delhi Cantt. He highlighted the contribution of women to different fields including the armed forces, the country’s space programme, start-ups, banking and insurance. The PM said the government has removed obstacles to the entry of women in different areas, while speaking about the opening of frontline roles to women in the military, including command roles, combat positions and permanent commission. “Be it Agniveers or fighter pilots, the participation of women is only increasing in the armed forces,” he said. An all-women tri-service contingent consisting of Agniveers (recruited for short-term in the personnel below officer rank cadre under the Agnipath scheme), led by women officers, took part in the Republic Day parade for the first time. Also, 15 women pilots, including six fighter pilots, were a part of the spectacular flypast. They flew Rafales, Sukhoi-30s and helicopters.Women in uniform are no longer on the fringes but are being assigned central roles on a par with their male counterparts. Women were in the driver’s seat at the parade and 80% of all activities involved them, including the heralding of the parade by 112 women artistes playing a variety of Indian musical instruments from across the country and the Vande Bharatam cultural extravaganza involving 1,500 women. The national flag was also unfurled on the arrival of President Droupadi Murmu by a woman officer, Major Saumya Shukla, amid the roar of a 21-gun salute. The number of women in Central Armed Police Forces has more than doubled during the last 10 years and states are being encouraged to recruit more women in the police force, the PM said. More than 400 sarpanchs of ‘vibrant villages’ and around 100 women belonging to various self-help groups from different parts of the country attended the NCC rally as special guests. The government’s vibrant village programme is aimed at the comprehensive development of select villages along the country’s northern border with China, and covers areas of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Ladakh.“When the country gives equal opportunity to the talent of sons and daughters, its talent pool becomes enormous,” Modi said.He encouraged the youth to leverage the opportunities presented by Digital India.
