At a Hollywood dinner, Angela Bassett and Mel Brooks accept honorary Oscars.

Reuters, Los Angeles, January 9 - Hollywood's film academy honored actor Angela Bassett on Tuesday for a lifetime of iconic performances, ranging from Tina Turner to the Wakanda queen.At the annual Governors Awards, comedian Mel Brooks was presented with a golden statuette in front of a star-studded audience that included Natalie Portman, Bradley Cooper, and Leonardo DiCaprio.As she accepted her medal on stage, Bassett honored the ten Black women who had won Academy Awards, listing each one individually. She also expressed her wish that the film business would provide people of color greater opportunity."My prayer is that we leave this industry more enriched, forward-thinking and inclusive than we found it," Bassett, who is 65 years old, remarked. "At the end of the day, we all just want to have the opportunity to do great, meaningful work." Bassett received two competitive Oscar nominations. She received recognition for two roles: one as Turner in the 1993 film "What's Love Got to Do with It," and the other as Queen Ramonda in the 2022 film "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."
