New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed criminal proceedings against Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Swami Prasad Maurya in the case where he has been accused of having made "objectionable" remarks about 'Ramcharit Manas', a sacred text in the Awadhi language based on the epic Ramayana.
In addition, the Supreme Court sent notice and requested a response from the Uttar Pradesh government regarding Mr. Maurya's appeal against an Allahabad High Court ruling that had denied his petition to have the proceedings in a state Pratapgarh court quashed."Why must you always be so sensitive? It's up for interpretation. A bench of Justices B R Gavai and Sandeep Mehta questioned the Uttar Pradesh representative, "How is it an offence?"
The bench said, "Notice... Stay of proceedings."
Days had passed since the idol of 'Ram Lalla,' the baby Lord Ram, the ruling deity of the recently constructed Ram temple in Ayodhya, was dedicated.
Mr. Maurya challenged the charge sheet against him and the lower court's summons order, which required him to appear before the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court, in his petition. On October 31, 2023, the high court rejected his plea.
An FIR was lodged in Pratapgarh district last year against Maurya and others on a resident Santosh Kumar Mishra's complaint.
A lower court received a charge sheet from the police against Maurya and other individuals, and summonses were sent to them.According to Mr. Maurya, there is insufficient evidence to support the accusation that he denigrated the Hindu scriptures.
