Congress MP Imran Masood has sparked political controversy after alleging that the Samajwadi Party (SP) "cannot tolerate Muslim leaders." His remarks came during an ongoing war of words with SP leaders and have created visible friction between the two parties, which have previously cooperated under the INDIA bloc. According to reports, this is the first time since the INDIA alliance was formed in 2023 that a senior Congress leader has publicly accused SP of sidelining Muslim leadership. Masood's comments were made while responding to criticism from SP leader Udayveer Singh. He claimed that SP has a history of not allowing strong Muslim leaders to emerge and said the party is uncomfortable with Muslim politicians who speak independently and keep their promises. He also referred to past Muslim leaders associated with SP to support his argument.
The remarks have reportedly upset several SP leaders, who fear the controversy could damage the party's image among Muslim voters ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Some leaders are also unhappy that the Congress has publicly backed Masood instead of distancing itself from his statements. Political observers believe the exchange reflects growing tensions between Congress and SP over leadership and seat-sharing as preparations for future elections begin. While neither party has officially announced any change in alliance strategy, the public disagreement has raised questions about the strength of opposition unity in Uttar Pradesh.
