H-1B obstacles and OPT hope: Indian students in the US struggle with evolving visa regulations

H-1B obstacles and OPT hope: Indian students in the US struggle with evolving visa regulations

Students and professionals are eagerly awaiting President Donald Trump's next step as Indian residents' chances of finding employment abroad have drastically decreased due to the US's restrictive immigration laws. The new regulation has left many people, particularly those who are about to graduate, scurrying to reevaluate their plans and look for alternatives elsewhere in a country that accounts for the biggest number of H-1B visa holders worldwide.Chell Roberts, dean of the University of San Diego, described the announcement as "like a seismic shock." "Students, families, and businesses who have long seen the H-1B as a bridge to opportunity have had their dreams disrupted. "The recent increase in the H-1B cost and the planned changes to the lottery system have made it more difficult for Indian students studying in the United States to obtain a work visa. Notwithstanding these difficulties, the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program is still an essential means of obtaining job experience, even though new regulations may restrict chances in the future. Although some students think that concentrating on developing excellent academic and professional profiles is still the most effective approach, others are worried about employment prospects and career timetables.

According to data from the Ministry of Education, there are over 33 lakh kids enrolled in over one lakh single-teacher schools nationwide, with Andhra Pradesh having the most of these institutions and Uttar Pradesh having the most students enrolled in them. 33,76,769 kids were enrolled in 1,04,125 single-teacher schools in India during the 2024–2025 school year, with an average of roughly 34 pupils per school.Despite efforts to rectify the situation, over 33 lakh Indian pupils are still enrolled in schools with just one teacher, and the roughly one lakh schools where they attend have not hired a teacher to replace their current one. For the academic year 2024–2025, the Union Ministry of Education released data from the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) last week, showing that 1,04,125 schools in India are operated by a single teacher, serving 33,76,769 children. Andhra Pradesh has the most single-teacher schools, followed by Karnataka, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Lakshadweep. Nonetheless, Uttar Pradesh leads the pack in terms of student enrollment in single-teacher schools, followed by Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh.Single-teacher schools are still a major problem in India, despite a decline in their numbers from 1,18,190 in 2022–2023 to 1,10,971 in 2023–2024. According to the ministry, "the number of single teacher schools has decreased by approximately 6% in the reporting year compared to the prior year due to the deliberate and significant governmental interventions." According to officials, in order to guarantee "optimal teacher availability," attempts are being made to redistribute teachers from schools with no students enrolled to single-teacher schools.

vignesh Shivan, the spouse of Tamil filmmaker and actress Nayanthara, has released the first review of Merry Christmas, escalating anticipation for the movie. The rules will cover all forms of advertising, regardless of form, format, or medium, and will be applicable to all coaching centers, both physical and online.Thirteen coaching institutes received notices from the body for their deceptive advertisements, and nine of them were penalized. The guidelines, according to Nisha Sampath, founder of Bright Angles Consulting, encourage responsible brand building, which will ultimately help the sector."Coaching institutes hold great power and influence and operate as a parallel economy within the education sector. This industry speaks with parents and students who are lower on the social scale but still want to move up the ladder more and more. Additionally, they are becoming more prevalent in smaller towns. Therefore, it's critical that these new customers are not duped, she continued. However, how will these guidelines benefit both consumers and the education sector? "These guidelines will help reduce the miscommunication of schemes and false claims by defaulters," says Amit Relan, co-founder and CEO of mFilterIt. In order to safeguard their brand integrity and prioritize authenticity, advertisers will need to prioritize transparency and accuracy, which will promote an equitable educational environment. He goes on to say that when advertising their coaching institutes, advertisers should be open and honest about their intentions. The strict guidelines will require coaching centers to verify their claims, reveal student outcomes, and refrain from using misleading practices. As a remedy, Goyal believes that since they bear equal responsibility, advertising agencies ought to conduct due diligence before taking on a client. "There is no place for morally or ethically sound guidelines when everything is business." The industry associations only publicly identify and shame defaulters on their website, which is essentially of no consequence. To shout that the advertisement was deceptive, they had to print and announce it in bold in the newspaper, he added.

What is a professional rut and how can employers and employees deal with it?

Two strategies that employees can use to break free from a professional rut or the feeling of being stuck in a job are to look for new mentors and acquire new skills. Here are some additional strategies to help you through this phase of your career.Priyanka Srivastava, a solution architect for an IT company, remembered how, as a technical quality manager in 2021, she had begun to feel that she was "almost done with the way things were"—a sensation known as a career rut. I therefore began to request work that I believed was more productively related. I was able to train one of our top clients with assistance from one of my managers. That made a big difference. After 11 years of hard effort, I obtained my first onsite job," remembered Srivastava. She was able to break out from her stagnant situation when she was given the opportunity to take on a functional role inside the organization. With six-year veteran HR specialist Vignesh Raghupathy, something similar happened. The decision to leave that zone and start over in a new setting with a new team came "under a tremendous amount of work pressure, lack of support from his team, and even lack of clarity from the company," as Raghupathy remembered. It seems like being in a rut when you work at a job that is monotonous and produces little output. In any very demanding work setting, it leads to feelings of disappointment and contempt. "Being in a career rut is defined as a state in which one feels completely unmotivated, dissatisfied, or stuck in their current employment or career path. It is typified by a sense of disillusionment, monotony, and a sense of being stuck in a work routine that no longer leads to advancement or fulfillment, according to Dr. Somdutta Singh, a serial entrepreneur, advisor to the Indian government, and founder and CEO of Assiduus Global Inc. (core committee member of WEP-Niti Aayog).A professional rut is more like a combination of circumstances that keep you stuck in your career than just not loving your job. It's possible that you are burnt out, that your beliefs don't align with your work, or that you are not learning anything new. Consider it like trying to solve a puzzle: in order to solve the issue, you must identify the components that are the source of the problem. Understanding the warning signals of a career rut is the first step to taking back control of your work life. According to Jaisleen Kaur, an image consultant, life coach, and trainer of soft skills, "acknowledging these feelings is crucial for personal and professional growth, whether it is a lack of enthusiasm, monotony in daily tasks, or a persistent feeling of unfulfillment."Two strategies that employees can use to break free from a professional rut or the feeling of being stuck in a job are to look for new mentors and acquire new skills. A bad work environment and burnout can result from a number of things, according to experts, including inadequate leadership, communication problems, and an unbalanced work-life schedule.
