Indian tennis sensation Sumit Nagal made waves on Tuesday when he defeated Australian Open first-round opponent Alexander Bublik, the 31st seed, in straight sets.
One of Nagal's greatest victories to date, the triumph advances him to the Grand Slam tournament's second round, where he will face Chinese prodigy Shang Juncheng, 18, on Thursday.Nagal, ranked 137th in the world, won a decisive three-set match 6-4, 6-2, 7-6(5) in the intense heat of Melbourne on a court with much of open space. Nagal defeated a seeded player in a two-hour and forty-eight-minute match, making history as the first Indian to do it in 35 years in a Grand Slam main event. Speaking to the media following an incredible first day, Nagal explained how he defeated Kazakhstan's World No. 27.
"I was really narrowing my focus, to be honest. I was making every effort to keep my attention on myself. You can see what is happening since, of course, there is a scoreboard behind. However, I was making a lot of effort to follow the rules on the court and to continue honing my techniques." It's definitely the second time in my career that I've advanced to the second round of a Slam and defeated a seed for the first time, so it's a very proud and happy occasion. It was an excellent fit. The Haryana-born tennis star continued, "I'm pleased with how I was able to play today, carry the things that I was expected to on the court, and be able to achieve the win for myself.
