Dibakar Banerjee's Congratulations! With Abhay Deol in the lead role, Lucky Oye was released on November 28, 2008, just two days after the 26/11 attacks. Considering the mood of the nation at the time, the film did not receive much attention. Banerjee believes that despite the film's current level of acclaim, audiences were "disappointed" when it first debuted in theaters. Additionally, he described the movie as the "anti-Khosla Ka Ghosla," his previous box office success that has grown into a cult classic. Speaking to Samdish Bhatia on his program Unfiltered by Samdish, Banerjee remarked, "People nowadays take names like Oye Lucky (Lucky Oye) and Khosla (Ka Ghosla) in one breath." However, a lot of people were let down by Oye Lucky's outspoken hostility to the middle class.
