WASHINGTON (AP) – Following weeks of warnings to the group to stop their drone and missile strikes against commercial vessels in the Red Sea or face dire consequences, U.S. and U.K. warships and planes unleashed rounds of missiles against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen early on Friday in Sanaa.Prior to this, the United States had refrained from retaliating, a reflection of greater American worries about upending the precarious truce in Yemen and starting a wider fight in the area. However, the Houthis conducted their most powerful assault to date on a number of foreign warships and commercial ships in the Red Sea on Tuesday, employing eighteen one-way attack drones, anti-ship cruise missiles, and an anti-ship ballistic missile.
Even though Tuesday's attack was repelled by American and allied military vessels and aircraft defending the waterways, the magnitude and impact of the launch prompted international condemnation and left little choice but to heed warnings that any additional attacks would result in a significant response.
