On the first day of "big school," your youngster is crying uncontrollably and clinging to your leg at the school gate. You don't understand. There was a lot of enthusiasm and anticipation in the weeks before this day; uniforms were eagerly tried on and school supplies were sourced and labeled. Your youngster is accustomed to the idea of a drop-off because they have been attending daycare for years. However, something seems strange today, and you realize you're not alone when you see other parents going through similar separation difficulties. No matter how much we prepare for it, the move from daycare to big school is not always easy. According to a recent poll conducted by early learning educators Young Academics, 42% of parents reported that their child had difficulty making the transition from daycare to major school, and 72% of parents worry that their children are not ready for school.
Young Academics and The Wiggles collaborated to improve their curriculum by adding music-based materials that support children's growth in self-assurance, emotional fortitude, and academic and creative abilities. However, is this a workable strategy and is it generalizable? Indeed, according to Dr. Steffen A. Herff, head of the Sydney Music, Mind, and Body Lab at the University of Sydney's Sydney Conservatorium of Music. According to him, music can help young children make the transition from daycare to big school in a number of ways, including by facilitating their expression and communication and serving as a "powerful tool to foster social bonding."In addition to promoting memory, inventiveness, and higher order thinking, he asserts that "music, dance, and other art forms have remarkable abilities in terms of regulating emotions." Crucially, they also provide a simple route to shared enculturation, which can greatly contribute to a feeling of kinship and belonging with individuals or locations you may have only recently encountered.
