The bill governing the appointment of the chief election commissioner and other election commissioners was approved by the Lok Sabha on Thursday. The goal of the new measure is to create a system for choosing the top election officials. The Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023 was approved by the Lok Sabha following a brief debate. The bill has already received approval from the Rajya Sabha.The law contains information about the chief election commissioner's appointment, qualifications, search and selection committee, term of office, salary, resignation and removal, leave, and pension, among other election commissioner-related matters.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal referred to the Election Commission (Conditions of Service of Election Commissioners and Transaction of Business) Act, 1991 as a "half-baked attempt" to address the CEC and ECs' service conditions, saying the current bill addresses the areas not covered by the earlier laws.
