Archer Harvinder Singh, a gold medallist at the Paralympics, accused the renowned Khel Ratna award of "discriminating" against him by leaving his name off the suggested list. The removal of double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker from the original list, which only included men's hockey player Hamanpreet Singh and Paralympic gold-winning high jumper Praveen Kumar, has sparked controversy, despite a sports ministry spokesperson attempting to defuse the situation by stating that the list is still pending.
Three years after winning the nation's medal in archery at the Tokyo Games, Harvinder, who won India's first-ever Paralympic gold medal in Paris, questioned why different athletes were held to different standards when their accomplishments were same."The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award was given to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic gold medallists, but what about the Paris 2024 Paralympic gold medallists? Why not the same prize for the same competition, gold, and pride? On X, Singh wrote.
