The Indian Weightlifting Federation's (IWLF) Athletes' Commission has elected Mirabai Chanu, a silver medallist at the Olympics, as its chairperson, and S. Sathish Kumar, a gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games, as its vice-chairperson. They will serve a four-year term.One of the most accomplished weightlifters in India, Mirabai has set numerous national records and achieved numerous historic firsts. She holds the national record with her personal best total lift of 205 kg, which includes 86 kg in snatch and 119 kg in clean and jerk.With an 88kg lift, she also owns the national record in snatch. She became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which was a turning point for the sport in the nation. She was the first Indian to win gold at the World Weightlifting Championships in more than 20 years in 2017, breaking a 22-year wait.

"The Indian Weightlifting Federation has my sincere gratitude for choosing me to serve as its Chairperson of the Athletes Commission. I'm really proud to have the chance to speak for and support my fellow weightlifters," Mirabai remarked."I promise to treat the role's responsibilities with seriousness. In order to guarantee that we may continue to devote ourselves fully to the sport without being sidetracked by outside influences, I will endeavor to disseminate the players' voices and perspectives through all relevant channels," she stated.At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Sathish won a gold medal in weightlifting. He lifted a total of 317 kg when competing in the men's 77 kg division, which included 144 kg in snatch and 173 kg in clean and jerk. He had previously won the gold in Glasgow in 2014, and this was his second consecutive Commonwealth Games victory.
