Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which was created by actor C. Joseph Vijay, currently has the backing of nine additional MLAs from the Congress (five), CPI (two), and CPI(M) (two), thanks to the two Left parties' unequivocal support on Friday, May 8, 2026.TVK won 108 seats (including Vijay's second seat) despite having a split mandate in the Assembly election, as no party or front was able to achieve a majority. To demonstrate a majority of 118 MLAs, the party now needs the backing of two more MLAs.TVK chairman Vijay's claim to form the state government was refused by Governor Rajendra Arlekar, who asked the party to return only after gaining the backing of 118 MLAs.

Earlier in the day, Tamil Nadu Congress members organized a nationwide protest against Arlekar. The coalition now has 108 seats in TVK, 5 in Congress, 2 in CPI, 2 in CPI(M), and 2 in VCK. In the meantime, Vijay's attempt to form the government of Tamil Nadu has received official unreserved endorsement from the Communist Party of India (CPI).
