The Swedish government is considering more stringent requirements for citizenship, such as an eight-year residency requirement, a language test, and a test on Swedish society. The new policies prioritize "honest living" and make it more difficult for people with unpaid debts or felonies to become citizens. With a government investigation suggesting "honest living" as a requirement, Sweden's government has stated its intention to strengthen the requirements for gaining Swedish nationality.Additionally, the plan recommends extending the period of time foreigners must reside in Sweden prior to submitting an application for citizenship.

According to a 2023 probe by the center-right government, the new recommendations would require applicants to complete tests on Swedish society, morals, and language and to live in the country for eight years, instead of the present five."Citizenship must be earned, not handed out unconditionally," stated Johan Forssell, the minister of migration, in an Instagram post.
