PowerSchool is in contact with Canada's privacy commissioner following a high-profile data breach involving their software, which is used by schools throughout North America to store student data.In an email to Global News, a representative for Philippe Dufresne's office stated, "The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada is in contact with PowerSchool to obtain more information about this breach and to determine next steps."The announcement from Dufresne's office follows The Canadian Press's story that the data hack has impacted other Canadian school boards.

To ascertain the scope of the breach, officials from Ontario, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia said they are collaborating with PowerSchool. On its website, the software's developer states that it has concluded that certain "personally identifiable information," including social security numbers and health information, "was involved" in the hack. PowerSchool claims to have learnt about the problem on December 28 and is currently investigating who may have had their data compromised.
