When Nargis first met Raj Kapoor, a 22-year-old aspiring director who was still working on the first movie from his just established RK Studios, she was just 16 years old. They fell in love despite Raj's marriage to Krishna Raj Kapoor, as is widely known. In their idealized world, they were in a relationship, but when Nargis realized it was hopeless, the bubble broke. In the mid-1950s, she discovered that her possibilities were beginning to drastically decline for a celebrity of her kind, and even at RK Studios, she wasn't receiving the kind of job that had initially brought her fame.

Before casting Nargis, other banners frequently turned to Raj, seemingly to get his approval. She had also come to the painful realization that Raj would never leave his wife, and although this devastated her, she had broken free from the lovesick state in which she had been trapped for nearly ten years. Around this time, Mehboob Khan offered her the role of Mother India, which made her famous in the history of Hindi cinema. It was on this set that she met Sunil Dutt, the man she would eventually marry.Sunil played Nargis' son in the movie, and the two would hang out with Rajendra Kumar. After Sunil saved Nargis during a fire on the movie set, Nargis fell in love with him in the days that followed. She spent days beside Sunil's bedside taking care of him because his burns were far worse than hers. She came to realize the genuine meaning of love as a result of their friendly conversations, and after two weeks, they decided they wanted to tie the knot.
