There are concerns over whether former US President Joe Biden will carry out his $183.6 billion student loan forgiveness program at the end of his tenure and how his actions will affect minority borrowers now that Donald Trump is back in the White House.Uncertainty surrounds the future of student loan forgiveness in the United States following Donald Trump's spectacular comeback to the White House for a second term. According to the US Department of Education, former US President Joe Biden had forgiven $183.6 billion in student loans, impacting around 5.3 million Americans. These programs, which aimed to alleviate financial hardship, notably assisted borrowers who had been deceived, had disabilities, or were carrying loans that were decades old.

The future of these measures under Trump, who has long criticized them as unjust and expensive, is now uncertain, however, as the Biden administration has left office. The key question still stands: will he uphold the loan relief pledges made by Biden, or will the terms of repayment become more stringent?WHAT BIDEN DID: MILLIONS WERE RELIEVED Biden's loan forgiveness initiatives were widespread and had an impact on many groups of people who were struggling with student loan debt. When his administration unveiled a comprehensive relief program aimed at low- and middle-class households, he pledged to forgive up to $20,000 for each borrower. But in 2023, the Supreme Court struck down the relief scheme. It decided that it was excessive to use the HEROES Act of 2003—a law designed to provide emergency assistance during times of national emergency—as justification for the cancellation of a significant portion of student loans.
