According to this verdict, Indian students who wish to pursue medical studies overseas must henceforth meet NEET UG requirements in order to be admitted to international medical schools. The Medical Council of India's rule requiring students to pass the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in order to enroll in undergraduate medical programs at overseas universities was upheld by the Supreme Court on Wednesday. This law, which was put into effect in 2018, makes sure that Indian students pursuing medical studies overseas fulfill the requirements needed to practice medicine in India.According to the court's decision, the rule is transparent, equitable, and compliant with all applicable laws. Completing the eligibility requirements outlined in the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 1997, is a prerequisite for passing the NEET UG. The petition was considered by a Supreme Court bench consisting of Justices B R Gavai and K Vinod Chandran.

The petitioners had contested the rule, claiming that the Indian Medical Council Act of 1956 had not been changed in its introduction. Nonetheless, the court determined that Section 33 of the Act gave the Medical Council the authority to enact the regulation."Obviously, with open eyes, if any candidate chooses to enroll in a foreign institution to pursue a course leading to a primary medical qualification after the amended regulations went into effect, they cannot request an exemption from the regulations, which establish crucial eligibility requirements for practicing medicine within the nation." The panel stated that this does not limit their ability to practice anyplace outside of India.
