Princess Diana's Dress Raises a Record $1.15 Million

"The evening gown in black and blue, which sold for over 11 times the asking price, is evidence of Diana's lasting appeal more than 25 years after her passing.She donned the floor-length ballerina gown twice, first for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1985 and then for a dinner hosted by the mayor of Florence, Italy, in 1986. Diana, Princess of Wales, sold that dress at auction on Sunday for almost $1.15 million, setting a record price for one of her gowns.

The piece, created by Jacques Azagury, the Moroccan-British fashion designer, was “synonymous with the Princess of Wales’s royal elegance and eternal grace,” the Hollywood auction house, Julien’s Auctions, said in a statement, noting that it had sold for more than 11 times what the auction house had predicted that it would bring.The dress was offered for sale with an accompanying illustration that showed off its metallic star-embroidered black velvet bodice, two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow—a tribute to Diana's passion for dancing—and shoulder pads, one of her signature looks.
