The Mizo National Front (MNF) president and outgoing chief minister of Mizoram, Zoramthanga, claimed on Monday that his party's disastrous performance in the state assembly elections was primarily due to anti-incumbency sentiment. In the evening, following the MNF's crushing defeat at the hands of the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), which secured 27 seats in the 40-member assembly, he tendered his resignation to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati. According to news agency ANI, Mizoram's departing chief minister, Zoramthanga, attributed his party's defeat to the state's anti-incumbency sentiment. Zoramthanga accepted responsibility for his loss in the poll, stating: "I lost because of the anti-incumbency effect and people not being happy with my performance. I respect the people's decision and hope that the upcoming administration will lead effectively. The assault of Covid and anti-incumbency sentiment is it (the cause).
