Canada eliminates the PGWP's field of study requirement for foreign students.

By eliminating the field of study criterion, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship department of the Government of Canada has made it easier for international students to get a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). In 2024, the mandate was implemented for Canadian institutions, but not for colleges. The change was made in order to give the nation's international education system more scrutiny.According to Larissa Bezo, CEO of the Canadian Bureau for International Education, the PGWP field of study criterion will no longer be met by graduates of the nation's college degree programs.By eliminating the field of study criterion, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship department of the Government of Canada has made it easier for international students to get a post-graduation work permit (PGWP).

In 2024, the mandate was implemented for Canadian institutions, but not for colleges.Prior to now, in order to be eligible for a PGWP, students had to have completed programs in particular subjects linked to long-term shortage occupations. The restriction will no longer be in effect, though, as a result of this recent development, giving overseas students more options for employment in Canada once their studies are over. Students must still demonstrate competency in either French or English, meeting Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) 7 in French or Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 7 in English across all four language domains.
