A poll official called an article published by Mid-Day "false news" and said the magazine had received a defamation warning.A poll official asserted that an electronic voting machine (EVM) is a stand-alone system with "robust administrative safeguards" to protect it from manipulation and that an OTP was not required to unlock it. However, allegations of hacking into the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha seat have escalated into a major political slugfest between the Opposition and the Bharatiya Janata Party.Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress party, and other opposition leaders claimed on Sunday that a relative of Shiv Sena candidate Ravindra Waikar, who won the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency by a razor-thin margin of 48 votes, was discovered using a cell phone that was "connected" to an electronic voting machine (EVM) on June 4 during the general election count.

They were citing a report published by the Mid-Day newspaper. The Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency's returning officer, Vandana Suryavanshi, disagreed with the article, calling it "false news," and stated that a defamation notice had been sent to the media.Regarding the matter, the BJP further disparaged the opposition leaders and insisted that the Election Commission of India bring legal action against anyone who disseminated the news article in order to "amplify the lie."
